New Head Unit
#21
Nobody noticed my homemade garage door opener in the instrument panel? I have 2 garage doors so I decided that a window switch should work to operate both. I had to take the guts out of the each door opener and soldered the wires to the switch. Works like a dream... I figured Flash of all people would have noticed that detail?
Dude, very cool idea and clean too! I'm gonna' have to ask if I can exploit your ingenuity and copy-paste, if that's okay.

+1 on the viewability in a cab. Wifey and I were trying to twirl the ipod controls on the new Pioneer deck. Eventually we just gave up an listened to the radio...

Sound is fantastic though - thanks again dude!!! It was the first drive up the 101 with blondie right seating and Jackiem rolling bass through the cab - very very nice afternoon

I have the same, but in "Becker Mexico" rather than Porsche CDR22 due to the display angle thing (BTW BBZ, Becker US does modify the Porsche CDR22 displays, used to be $50, now they charge $100, plus postage, I believe it is just a matter of modifying the SW - the Becker Mexico has adjustable display angle).

These units, according to my local Car-Fi shop has very clean signal, so lends themselves well to external amplification, and FM reception is better than in any other car radio I have.

Agreed, Flash, they are very poor in features, so if you want to get the best out of them, you may need external amplification with an equalizer. I do like the look though, and think they do fit very nicely in the Porsche interior. Used to have a top of the range (although few years old) Pioneer in there, but just could not get used to the silvery look and blue flashing lights..

lol - glad to have helped - as soon as i figure out what to do about the display, i'll let you know - the manual should have some instructions on how to change backgrounds, colors, and such though, which should help - it was on a disk though and we were running way too far for me to go through it that day on the old slow computer in the garage

i definitely want t-bone to hear your car though (and frankly also anybody who doesn't think the stock speakers can sound good)

Quote:When I got my 968 a couple of weeks back, it head a pimped out Alpine unit. While nice, I am much more into the cleaner, OE look. I know there are better head units but I really liked the look of the Becker CDR-220, along with the Aux input and I am used to it from my Boxster. My wife started to get concerned when i had the whole center console out on the garage floor, but I kept assuring her I knew what I was doing...

Here is the result. I really like it.

Came across this post, thanks T-Bone if you are still on the forum. I have the same Becker head unit languishing in a cupboard and have been thinking about installing it (yes I understand the sound quality is not up to my Kenwood, but my 968 is a cab so hifi isn't really a consideration), yours looks appropriate so I think I'll do likewise. And the idea of hiding the garage opener behind a dummy window switch is brilliant!!

Have a good weekend Smile

I would be happy to be able to listen to my stock unit - only the rear two speakers have any sounds coming out of them. I have traced every lead on the center console and fuse I could find - I replaced the am under the passenger seat as the original was all gooey and looked overheated and blown. The only thing I haven't down is pull the door cards to see if the actual speakers are hooked up. I have owned the car since 2013 and have never listened to anything other than the exhaust notes.
