new article - have some questions
#21

1. Favorite – Ok, this is a tough one to narrow down other than to say its the complete package/feel (smile factor) when driving it and the looks you get from people trying to figure out what it is as you fly by…Highlights in no particular order - Uniqueness, Handling, Performance, Affordability, Ability to actually work on the car, Style/Looks, The increasing availability of some nice/reasonably price modifications (chip/airbox/catback/strut brace/sway bars/short shifter, etc) that most anyone can install and enhance the driving experience, I fit (6’ 4”) comfortably and its storage capacity (2 sets of golf clubs etc), it’s a Porsche. I could go on…but I think you get the picture – oh and Jay’s new girl friend in the passenger seat – hell I even let her drive…

2. Least favorite – Cost and availability of parts, Finding competent mechanics (we don’t all live next to Pete (RS Barn), Timing/balance belt maintenance potential for catastrophic failure (every 30k or five years what ever comes first – not bad really just something you need to stay on top of), I vacillate on the headlights fixed vs pop ups (never have been a pop-up fan I think it disrupts a car flowing lines) – since I installed the daytime running light relay the only time they really bug me is when is rainy/foggy during the day and I have them up – at night I don’t really notice them and they provide good visibility. No real deal breakers.

3. What drew you to the 968? I liked the 928’s styling when they came out but always thought they were to heavy and thought that Porsche needed to make a lighter more sporty version – so in the windows 7 theory the 968 was my idea…I remember when the 968 came out and I really liked it then – just couldn’t afford it. Move to 2002/2003 when I started thinking about getting a new/new to me car and my wife was pushing for BMW 3 series coupe – nice car but here in California you can’t throw a marshmallow without hitting one – to common for me – I then looked at the M3 coupe (the shoe) I liked it for its uniqueness and fun factor but I didn’t fit (not enough leg room). During that time I ran across the 968 again and started looking at them –jointed 968.net – and to make a long story short I bought mine off e-bay sight unseen from outside of Chicago (actually after I had won the auction a Guy from 968.net did look at for me but I never got a PPI) – original owner less than 18k on the odometer – and had it shipped to California ( my wife still hasn’t gotten over that transaction). When it arrived it became my daily driver and its been a love affair every since…

4. if you sold it, why? When I got it I figured I would keep it 5-7 years – now this July will be the 7 year mark and 44k miles later I still love driving it and have no plans to sell it – reality is I am jonesing for a cab these days to go with it (not sure how I would/will convince the wife I need one – she’s not a cab fan). I really like the looks of the Caymans but don’t know if I will fit in one and if I were to go that way I still wouldn’t want to give up the 968 – just make the Cayman the daily driver…

A little long winded but there's no short answer to any of these questions - good luck with the article.

1. Favorite?
1) The styling, especially the pop up "frog eyes" ;
2) the handling and
3) because it is a PORSCHE!

2. Least favorite?
The fact that my CV has no rear seats (yet) to take my youngest along with at times

3. What drew you to the 968?
I was looking for a 928 but came across the 968 and fell in love with the looks, handling & better affordability. The "love affair" is only increasing!

4. If you sold it, why?
At this moment I would say that it will never happen but interesting and unexpected things do happen in life. It may be the first in a "collection".

In no particular order......
- its a porsche
- best 1 of the original water coolers......
- best combination of "family" styling from the era and its still timeless
- uniqueness (still get the "don't think I've ever seen one")
- best sports car value (performance, handling, reliability, cost) on the market

Without a doubt the looks and styling.

Probably the lack of knowledgeable Porsche people about the car, its history and lineage. There seem to be plenty of parts if you need them from multiple sources so I think thats not a problem.

Owned a 944 Turbo and always admired the 968 as a next step up.

Would only sell to step up int another Porsche later model. (Cayman). Wouldprefer to keep both, but having 2- 2seaters is just not practicle.

1. Leg room (i am 6'3 and this is the first car i do not have the seat all the way back). The way the back of the car looks and the round "porsche" style headlights sold me. Also, the removable sunroof.

2. OEM part prices which are slowly heading towards infinity.

3. Rarity. I have only ever seen 1 other coupe.

4. Never. I will pull a Jeremy Clarkson and make my car into a living room set before i sell it!

Favorites - The car's flexibility/adaptability/and more recently, thanks to Flash & Co., its upgradability. I also like the huge sunroof, for that almost-a-cab feel, and of course the car's uniqueness. All for a bargain basement price.

Least favorites - The pop-up headlights, and the weight. Why does it have to be 300 lbs heavier than an RX7 twin turbo of the same vintage? Another 100 hp would be nice as well. And not to nitpick, but I hate not being able to drain the coolant from the engine block.

What drew me to it? This may sound very strange, but it was the fact that it has a back seat. I was looking for an interesting, sporty car that could take more than two people in a pinch, and was all but settled on an E36 M3, when I realized the 968 offered a comparable power-to-weight ratio, with a back seat kids could fit into, with a lot more uniqueness, for about the same price.

Sell it? No plans to. I've grown very attached to the 968. If anything, as time goes on, it may turn into a dedicated track car, but no telling.

Favorites - this is the best balanced car of any other I've ever driven. Great feedback when driven, especially when pushed hard. That plus the car's unique factor: it always garners attention wherever I go, and this is a non-concours 168K car.

Least favorite - hard-to-find OEM parts that cost much more then they are worth. Limited aftermarket sources when compared to other Porsche marques. Thank God I live 90 minutes from RS Barn.

What drew me to it - I was shopping for a 951 for over a year & drove a LOT of dogs. My wife found some 968's on Autotrader and suggested I check them out. Yes, I married the right woman. After the first drive I was HOOKED. Far better feel, balanced handling and driving experience then the 951 IMO. Sticks like glue on fast corners and twisties. Plus the lines and design just flow so well for me. I kinda like the pop-up lights: that is part of the car's uniqueness. My absolute favorite view of the car is from the rear.

Sell it? Not if I can help it. I've put a lot of money into my car: more than twice what I paid at purchase and without regret. Even for the money spent, I can't think of another car that would provide as much enjoyment and pride of ownership for the same $$$. Actually, the joy and challenge of constantly working to improve the car is half the fun.

Well here we go.

1. what is your favorite thing about the 968?

I love the look of this car and even the pop up headlights. I bought a tip and this just makes it an absolute joy for covering distance and around town driving. i f I had to put one thing above all the others, then it's definitely the handling, but this site and all the helpful people on it, comes a close second. Clearly, without you, owning te 968 nwould not be the pleasure it has been so far.

2. what is your least favorite thing about the 968? (same as above)

Like most here, it's the cost of the spares and here in the UK they can be a real pain to get hold of. Thank goodness for international post, so that I can get some stuff shipped in from your side of the pond.

3. what drew you to the 968?

I'm moving to France in the next year and I wanted a classic car that would be happy either on the autoroutes or on the the more rural roads. I also wanted something relatively practical. The 968 has exceeded all my expectations thus far.

4. if you sold it, why?

Despite the practicality of the hatch (Oh I forgot how much I hate the delamination!) I have a yearning for a cab.

Flash, in response to questions 2 and 4.....

2. Least favorite - sunroof mechanics, I stopped fixing mine ages ago. I havent had the roof in in yrs. Instead, i carry a big golf umbrella and wait on the side of the road for the storm to pass.... also saves about 20 lbs of dead weight as well

4. No plans to sell anytime soon, although i'm thinking of replacing the 90' S2 cab with a '68 cab for the spring. Although the S2 is in mint condition, the 968 is a better and more refined car that i enjoy significanlty more
