Never mind a great road........
#1

just got my baby back after three weeks at the garage! No, not major surgery or anything. Just replacing the oil pump gasket basically. Car languished for two weeks waiting to get done! Still needs to go back for brake and fuel pipes(sigh). But getting on the road today, even the all too short miles back to work and then the painfully meagre 5 miles home thereafter( mental note.. must move further away from my business!) was bliss. Opened her up to 6k revs in third ( Flash please take note!) aah, wonderful! Give the garage their due in spotting my poor condition tyre valves, so had that fixed at a tyre specialist on the way to work. 968's are wonderful things! Bless 'em!

As I have said before, I work at the top of a road named Giant's Despair. It has the second oldest hill climb in the country every year. It had not been paved in 10 years. This winter killed the road and made it tough to drive . The hill climb is this weekend. They have just paved the road. I have been having a blast zoooming up and done all week. Probably need new tires. But hey, the weather was nice, the roadway magnificent and just what do we buy these cars for?

A couple of those turns might require Giant Diapers - or at least giant cajones.

How cool that they shut down that road. Have you ever done the timed event Andy?

No rxter I haven't. Maybe just as well as seem to be semi-permanently tired these days. Have to say for all the huff and puff from the Mustang, it didn't look very quick. Probably an illusion of some sort with the camera.

After my last post I think if I tried to wallop over Giant's Despair it would turn into "Paint's Aged Sir" all over the road!

The building at the end is where I work. The second turn which is a right turn over the crest of a hill is where, after 2 weeks of owning my 968, I did some severe rear end spinns before I managed to get it under control. Mighty close to the guardrail I might add. Being new to all this I was shaking for a while after that. That was a good video of the run. As I said the road has just been paved so there shouldn't be any of that bouncy ride. Can you imagine coming down it in the wntertime with snow on the road? The camber is off and pitches you to the right, which means you have to go down on the left side. Sure learns ya like real quick how to drive or crash. And of course there are those Depends moments! The other interesting feature of the road is how on a normal ride up, the toll it exacts on a car. My Infiniti G37SX blasts up the hill. But the car just smells afterward. I have seen cars overheat and others just break down. Most go slowly because their cars just can't handle the grade. One local guy, Larry Danko wins it most every year. Lost last year for the first time in 6 years. And of course, when our patients decide to leave AMA or just elope. That's the walk down they have.

Have you ever tried Goodyear Eagle F1's Rap? Great for the wet obviously, but great also when it's dry. Chock's away Ginger! Tally Ho!

I have not. I am doing a driving course at Pocono on Tuesday and will look even closer at the tires then. Thanks for the suggestion. Hip Hip

When you look at "normal" tyres with groove patterns running rounf the tyre perifery in a normal tread type formation then look at the Goodyear you can't help but thnk there's more rubber at the periphery. Almost looks like a soft slick with some seagull shaped grooves cut with a hot gun. Certainly holds the road. A bit noisy though. Need to go home from work soon, had to look up the spelling of noisy on the internet, not a good sign.

Hey Rap,

That hill climb is a blast! I was up there with my father-in-law two years ago, and we had a blast!! I remember seeing Danko's formula one style Lola racecar. Very cool! Your comments about the road are on the money - very strange engineering when they laid it down. You really have to know just about every inch, because a mistake there could leave a mark.

My wife's family has a cottage in Mountaintop, on Lake Nuangola, Lot's of fun hill climbs around there. I usually turn off the a/c so the engine will have just a bit less drag on it for the pull up the hills. I think during the winter, I would be thinking chains for the rear tires - seriously!

We also tend to go over to Wyoming Valley Golf Club for a few rounds and dinner when we visit. We'll be up there next weekend.

rxter - thanks for posting that video. Just like I remembered. We walked all over that course on a smokin' hot day. What's you connection to the car/driver? very cool....

Cheers!

Scott then with very little imagination you can invison winter driving. At least once a winter, I send our maintenance crew to pull an employee off the side of the road. Or we go pick up those who live close by or who park at the bottom of the hill. What weekend are you going to be here? Perhaps we could get together?
