Need speaker advice
#1

Hi all, can anyone confirm speaker sizes on a standard 968 Coupe 6-speaker system? Im looking to upgrade front components and I believe the mids are 4", is that correct? Has anyone had success moving to 5.25's or bigger? What size are the rears?

Ive already installed a new HU and antenna and have an Alpine amp to power new speakers. Thanks.

Rears are definitely 6 1/2. Fronts leave me fuzzy as it has been a while, I would have to check. Think they are 5 1/4 plus tweeter which I hollowed out and put in a matching Infinity component.

Thanks for the reply. I did have my grills off a few weeks ago and measured and I could have sworn they were 4" diameter across the cone, even 4" exactly between the screws. I asked someone else and they told me 5" and now Im second guessing myself. Anyway, the plan is to upgrade to some good 5.25's. Seems like there was a good 3/4" of space between the speaker and the grill so should be able to make some baffles to accomodate 5.25's if necessary. Would appreciate any more advice though!

the problem with the OEM setup is not the speaker. they are actually pretty decent. the problem is the location and installation. down at your hips is a horrible place for a speaker.

absolutely dynamat the sheet metal outer skin of the door, as well as any other location you can put the stuff. reducing the noise inside will go a long way toward making what you have work as well as it can.

that being said, you can get 5.25" speakers in there with a little trimming. just watch the ohm load.

Thanks Flash. So the plan was to replace speakers and dynamat at the same time, then amp using a small 4x50RMS Alpine amp. If the oem speakers are ok then should I just try amping them before replacing? Also was planning on making baffles with mdf but will I get away just modifying the existing mounts? Thanks.

i would. be aware that the weak point will actually be the tweeter, so creep up on the power. i popped mine with a similar amp, but it was in a cab, so it was pretty loud.

i don't think you will actually have room for baffles that would do you any good, and would probably just result in buzzing.

Here's a picture of the front Nokia speaker with dimensions in case you want to search for a suitable drop-in replacement. Vifa makes one that's close - NE123W-04

Thats all great information. Ive been scouring the web for a while, should have just asked sooner! Hopefully the oem speakers will hold out. The plan then will be a small sub, either a DLS RTX6 in the passenger footwell or a JL Audio 6 or 8" Micro Sub somewhere else.

Unlikely that I will have time to dynamat and install the amp this weekend but will update when its done. Thanks again.

i would definitely use a capacitor, or some other form of crossover to cut the front speakers off at the bottom at about 80-100hz. they won't really reproduce anything below that in that location, and will only result in distortion

The amp has hp/lp filter and crossover control. Should be able to do it with that?

Would it make sense to set up the 6.5's in the back in the opposite way until I have a sub in place?

Search for the post I made when I replaced all my speakers. I used Polk Audio in the back, Kicker in the front, and a Lanzar thin profile subwoofer. Probably a search for "Lanzar" will bring it right up. I know I put the model number of the Polk Audio speakers in the post. Everything fit great, and there are pictures of the subwoofer installation too, IIRC.

what do you mean "the opposite way"?

i am running JL Audio 6.5" speakers up front (they went lower than anything else i could find), and unless i have the windows or top down, they are enough all by themselves in free-air mode. i only need the sub with the top down or windows open.

if you used these, and did the rear speaker enclosure mod, i don't think you would need a sub at all in a hardtop car (unless you listen to hip hop)

I would love to do your 6.5 front mod but Im not confident enough in my metal cutting abilities! BTW the first time I ever installed a car stereo was 4 weeks ago! Give me another few months at least!

What I meant was to set the HPF on the fronts at around 100hz as you suggested, but then the LPF around the same on the rears, the idea being that the staging would be helped a little while isolating the bass to the rears. What do you think?

if you want to a 2 channel instead of 4 channel setup, sure.

i was talking about using the 6.5s i have up front, but in the rear of your car, using the "rear speaker enclosure mod". no cutting.

And use the 6.5's full range, as part of a 4 channel setup? Wouldnt they just overpower the fronts and put the stage behind you?

depends on your system. i have time alignment and staging options.

you could run the rears as full range or as subs. it really depends on what you want. remember that the rears do not face forward. the fronts will sound more present than the rears just due to the tweeters pointing at you. when you take the panels off, you will see that they are tilted rearward.

Geesh! Way over my head I would just like a basic radio that works. I can't figure out what I need to use to replace the original radio.

lol - i can relate. i pulled a REALLY nice single din JVC gps unit out of my blue car because i didn't drive it enough to remember how to work it. so, i installed the same deck i have in the other 2 cars i drive most. this of course led me on a very expensive journey, but at least i can listen to the radio without losing my mind.

lol - still not sure i've found a new home for the JVC though.

Thanks for the help Flash. I guess the best thing for me to do is install the amp and dynamat and have a play around with settings to find something I like. I have a nasty feeling that we may be discussing the 6.5's in the front at some point in the near future though! Will update the thread with my findings.

not sure you can ever put 6.5s up front in a hardtop. the larger window might be in the way.

but yes - one step at a time. see where you are, and then decide if you need to go farther. you'll be amazed at the change when you do the rear speaker enclosure mod.
