I don't know Bob. Maybe its just the Turbo's i have been in (which is quite a few)...But even my good friend who builds Turbocharged Honda track cars laughed at the boost gauge (in the 951 i sold to my other buddy) for being so off.

Let us know what you find when its all hooked up to your car.

please explain "off" - what did the guy think he should be seeing that he wasn't? at full boost at higher rpm it should have been halfway between the 1 and the 2, and at lower rpm (3k) it should have been a bit higher, but still nowhere near the right side

most of the time it should be in vacuum mode (left of the 1)

gauge arrived today - it was a complete cluster! great surprise - that helped me a lot and answered a couple of questions already

now i just need to pour over the wiring diagrams to see where the boost gauge gets its signal, and what kind of signal it is - still not sure this is the answer, as the gauge is a bit small, but maybe

i did figure out that what i was going to do won't work, so i had to come up with another idea for the square gauges - still not sure i like it yet

maybe tomorrow i'll have a stroke of brilliance (or maybe just a stroke)

getting closer to making this happen

spent the morning pouring over diagrams and wires - come to find out the wiring diagrams are WRONG, and all of the connectors are mislabeled in the diagrams - funny stuff

anyway, one test to conduct, but i think this just might work, using the 951 tach and boost gauge in the 968 cluster - i only need it to tell me if something is grossly wrong (vacuum leak, overboost, no boost, etc), so i am not really worried about specific accuracy of the gauge - i just need to know what kind of signal level it is getting, so that i can use the right MAP sensor to feed it

lol - of course a new gauge is only available from germany, and would cost me over $600

looks like this is going to work just fine - i should have it all hooked up and running tomorrow - i'm pretty stoked about this

ok - i'm losing my mind

i can bench voltage to the gauge and make it read 0 volts at full vacuum, 2.3 volts at atmospheric, and 5 volts at full boost - it only has 2 leads and responds to voltage just fine - essentially it reads like a volt meter would - needle goes left with less voltage, sits in the middle with 2.3, and goes to the right with more voltage - pretty simple

i tried a standard 5V 2 bar MAP sensor and it also shows 2.3 volts at atmospheric, and behaves appropriately to pressure change

when i connect them to each other, the voltage drops to 1.85 volts at atmospheric and the gauge will only respond to vacuum, and not boost

if i connect to 12V 3 bar sensor, the voltage still drops when connected, but it responds to boost and vacuum change, though does not read right because the gauge is 2 bar

so, i went out and bought a 951 KLR, since it has the electronics in it and the sensor and all that, thinking that there must be something special about this gauge that it has to have the 951 brain to feed it - i connect it up, and NO GO - while i can certainly see 2.3 volts at atmospheric, as soon as i hook up the gauge, it kills the voltage, and the needle barely moves

what the heck????

somebody smarter than me is going to have to figure this one out - this makes no sense

well, it looks like i figured it out - i have no idea why it works the way it does, but by jumping some wires around on the 951 tach electronics, combined with using the KLR, i can get it to work - it reads perfectly, and there are no calibration issues

wow, that was a pain in the butt - now i just need to figure out where i am going to mount the KLR, and await the vacuum fitting that screws into it so i can hook it all up permanently

ok - the boost gauge worked perfectly all weekend, and just as anticipated

of course this adventure started out with a very nice very accurate and fully functional VDO full sweep vacuum/boost gauge that cost about $40 and looked good along with the rest of the gauges - rather than go with that simple approach though, i opted for the more "interesting" route of spending about 3 weeks and $1000 making a new gauge face, marrying a 951 tach and a 968 tach together, and incorporating a KLR and 951 boost gauge, as well as having new graphics for the gauge face done to suit my preferences

clearly i have lost my mind
