Need Info on 17" Wheel Offsets
#1

OK, so the 93 coupe I picked up was originally optioned with 17" wheels. The real previous owner (I don't count the most recent owner of 11 months who did nothing to the car but drive it ) had a set of 17" replica wheels which I sold a year ago and the car is currently equipped with 16" Design 90 wheels which are in decent shape (as are the Kumho Ecsta rubber) so I won't need to replace them anytime soon. I have a couple of extra sets of OEM 5 spoke 16" that I could put on the car, BUT, I'm going to begin looking around for a decent set of 17" and I'm open to either the C2 Turbo (wider, flatter 5 spoke), Boxster Turbo Twists, or 993 cup wheels with the concave spokes...all of which can be had for fairly cheap these days.

My question is, what offset should I be looking for? I'd probably just go with the stock sizes of 8x17 and 9x17 (or were they 9.5x17) as I'm not looking to do anything fancy. For the rears, I assume a different width would mean a different offset? So that's the info I need...what fits without spacers and modifications.

I have a set of 17 in C2 Turbo replica wheels, manufactured by Mille Miglia. (The wheels were originally purchased for my 944, then moved to my 968.) The front wheels are 7.5 in wide, with 52 mm offset, and the rear wheels are 9 in wide, with 47 mm offset.

i had those exact wheels on my cab - i actually liked the extra outside offset - they looked good on the car - didn't like the extra weight so much, but it wasn't that bad (only a couple of pounds)

The factory C2 and 993 wheels were 7.5x17 front with 65 offset and 9x17 rear with 55 offset.

That brings up a small, not quite off topic question for me after seeing those pictures. I thought I had stock C2 wheels but mine say "Italy" on the inside as well, I assumed Porsche just had a contractor make them for the production run. Are these, in fact, not the stock wheels? I know it was factory ordered with 17" rims.

they were all contracted out - i believe the real ones are also made in italy - there is a fairly easy way to tell the difference though - the offsets are different on the replicas, and the replicas also say either mille miglia or MM on them

beside that, the contours are slightly different - the replicas have more of a right angle where the spoke meets the rim than do the real ones, and the other "corners" are a bit smoother on the real ones too

Another easy way to tell is that you throw your back out with the replicas trying to lift them and the real ones are only sort of heavy... I used to run the replicas on the track until I cracked two of the spokes

Not all of the C2 wheels or Cup wheels were 17x7.5s. Make sure you look for the 65mm offset part number 993.362.124.05. Most of the wheels out there for sale will be 993 wheels which were 17x7 with a 55mm offset.

If you want to find a really cool set of wheels, they actually made the original C2 Cups in a 17x8 and 17x9.5 setup. I had a set back in the late 90s and got rid of them when I bought an 84 911. I know, not the best choice on either account, but if you can find them, they make a really cool set of dual purpose wheels.

The easiest way to tell an OEM "cup" wheel (1or2)
is the width and offset is cast into the wheel next to the
valve stem.
Reps do not have this.

I love learning what all the little mysterious numbers mean. I just thought they were manufactures castings number for internal use. Mine are original and have 9/55 on the rear and 7.5/65 on the front.

Dave, those front wheels are pretty desirable.

Why the fronts in particular? Was this combination unusual? Nice to know something is desireable/special on the car. Now if I could only find the imaginary 220 on the options sticker - if I stare hard enough I can sometimes see it
