My 968
#1

I just bought a 94 coupe from an Ebay dealer. This is my first Porsche and am curious how I might find out more about the car, other than Carfax. The dealer does not have any info (options, maintenance performed) on the car. The history shows an accident reported a few years ago but does not specify details. The dealer states that there is no visible damage to the car (frame, engine) from an accident, so I think it might have been a minor one. Does any one have a way of finding out more about this car? How do I attach a pic to this post?

Thanks,

Rob

the option sticker should be located beneath the carpet in the rear of the car

not much you can do about history, unless you can convince the previous owner, or the shop that did the work to show you the records

pics are limited on Newbies to 200k and 800 x 600 - once you become a Rookie you can go up to 300k - the resize tools are on the index page - the tools to add pics are in the reply section when you click "add reply" - look for the "choose file" button

The option codes can also be found in the owners manual.

Welcome,

It would be very helpful if you would include your location in your profile.

You will find that this group actively meets face-to-face and you will probably find another enthusiast in your area who could look things over for you.

If not, read everything you can and ask lots of questions.

Regards,

jay

We also have a registry for the 968s. Contact me with your VIN and I can see if we have any information on your car. You can also call Porsche customer service at 800-767-7243. Tell them you are looking for information on your car. They'll need the VIN as well. They can tell you options but also the dealer number that sold the car new. Then you can contact that dealer, assuming they are still around, to see if they have service history. They'll have at least the new car service and if the owner continued to use them they'll have the warranty service info as well. You'll also want to join the Porsche club and the Porsche club 968 register. I can give you more details on that as well. Welcome.

My VIN is WP0AA2964RS820555. Thanks.

Anyone have any areas of the car I need to focus on first? Any common problems I might need to make sure my 968 does not have?

Thanks,

Rob

Well there is the near fatal p/b whine.

But it would be hard to notice if this is your first.

It is a sound comming from the tranny.

As it gets worse it sounds more and more like a jet engine.

As a minimum start with:

Timing and balance shaft belts.

All fluids flushed

Have the cams and vario unit inspected.

As Jay first stated..."where are you located?" Maybe there is a fellow 968er in your area that would be happy to give your car a look.

How many miles?

What colors?

C'mon, we are like little kids about this stuff...

But first, the sobering reality check: Smokie's recommendations are on target unless you can absolutely confirm these critical maintenance items have been accomplished competently and recently. The 968, like most Porsches, is an amazing mechanical device that will last for years and years. It is built to a far higher standard than any other mass-produced automobile. But a Porsche must be carefully cared for or it can get very expensive, very quickly. This care can also be expensive. Timing belt and water pump can easily set you back $1500. A new clutch is $1,000. A blown engine (which can happen if you neglect maintenance) is $8k+. A top end engine rebuilt is an easy $4k.

But these are the downsides. The upside is a car that will put a smile on your face every time you see it - and amazing performance that can be enhanced for not too much money. And the 968 is getting increasingly rare. No longer looked down on, it actually draws attention at events now.

Congratulations, and welcome to the forums!

Let's check the registry here, looks like RS820555 is a black six speed coupe with classic greay interior and 108K miles on it from the good state of Tennesse. It was on ebay a few weeks ago.

I live in Madison, Alabama (near the TN line). Very close to Birmingham, Nashville, or Chatanooga. Any one out there from these areas?

I spent some time down in Huntsville a couple of years ago for work. The local Porsche Club of America (Heart O' Dixie chapter) is pretty active and has a bunch of really friendly folks. There are a few members with 944's and I believe a couple of 968's as well. I know they have a monthly breakfast meeting, if you go to thier website I'm sure you can find the details.
