Mirror adjustment not working
#1

So here's the next small item on my to-do list... The power mirror adjustment isn't working on both mirrors. I've gone through the basics, I have mirrors. They have motors. The motors look rather new.

The movement switch seems to be getting power (i.e. I can short circuit it and blow the fuse). Not sure about the mirror selector switch in the console.

While fishing about in the doors to check wires, I noticed that there seems to be two wires (red, red&brown) with electrical connectors on them in each door, not connected to anything. Could these be related to my problem (they seem about the right length).

I haven't actually taken the door panels off yet, I'm trying to avoid doing that (firstly because I'm lazy and secondly because I don't want to break anything).

Any ideas on what else to check?

Yes, I did that. But couldn't see the red, red/brown connections on it, at least related to the mirrors. I was hoping someone had taken the mirrors off their car and could offer some ideas. I'll take my multimeter home tonight to test some more.

Sounds like the lower left connector (4 wires?) which is the crossover/speaker connector.

These two wires are heavier guage, and as far as I can tell the ones that go to the tweeters seem intact. There are connectors that poke out under the arm rest. If the parts diagram is right, the crossover should have been located under the armrest with the now nonexistant speakers, so I'm assuming those connectors are for the speaker/crossover.

The power windows function correctly. So I'm still wondering what's the purpose of those two wires.

Oh, and the heating works correctly on the mirrors. Just no movement <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> .

how can you see the wires without removing the panel?

I removed the power window switch panel from both drivers & passenger's side. I can almost access the mirrors from that. At the very least I can feel up in there and confirm that things seem to be connected (including the tweeters). I fished the red, red&brown wires out by just feeling around there with my fingers.

the mirror wires are in a loom (6 wires or something like that)

the red and brown/red wires are for the tweeter - it's right there in the wiring diagram

sounds like somebody hot-wired your tweeters

If the mirrors move when you turn up the radio, you'll know somebody crossed the wires.

Here's the status so far. Door panels off. Tweeters still in the doors, but not connected. So the mystery wires do seem to belong to the tweeters.

So now I'm looking at the wiring diagram, 968 Model 93, sheet 4.

I have checked mirror selector switch and joystick to verify correct operation (no resistance when closed). When pressing the joystick in a single direction, switch set to passenger's side, I get no voltage across pins 10&13 or 11&14 (the motors). The wiring diagram says there should be a connector with 6 wires connected to the switch for the "changeover switch", which looks to be the mirror selector switch on the console. However, my car has a connector with three wires connected to that switch, grey/black, blue/black, yellow/black.

My convertible top switch, coincidently has 6 wires that match those listed for the changeover switch. The wires for connector that's attached to the mirror selector match those that sheet 11 lists for the convertible top.

So it seems logical that I try to swap them. however when I do that and turn the key, my top starts to move.

What the hell? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/whine.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

*bangs head against wall*

They (one of the previous owners and/or a typical chilean mechanic) cut into the wiring harness for the power mirror and ran wires to the convertible top motors, presumably because the top wasn't working.

I dread what I'm going to find when I start getting into the mechanics.

Edit: I hooked up the power top switch to the correct connector, removed the patch cables and rewired the power mirror connector, and now everything worked perfectly So I don't even have a good explanation as to why they did it in the first place...

Glad you got it sorted! I totally empathize with you, as my first two P-cars were similarly "modified" by POs.
