Mid Ohio F Class Results
#1

Saturday Enduro:

1st - Gary Grigsby - 968

2nd - Jim Child - 968

3rd - Terry Heath/Steve Schardt - 944 S2

These were also the overall results in a race group of 48 cars that included all of the stock classes, B through I, as well as GT5. This race was run in very heavy rain, by far the worst that I have ever seen at Mid Ohio. Due to arriving late to the grid, Gary and I were forced to start from the back and work our way up to the front. The top three F cars managed to finish an entire lap ahead of the field.

Sunday Sprint:

1st - Gary Grigsby - 968

2nd - Terry Heath - 944 S2

3rd - Jim Child - 968

Again these were also the overall results in a race group of 45 cars that included F through I and GT5. Gary was easily the class of the field, although Terry kept him honest, briefly grabbing the lead once before losing it back a few turns later. 1st and 2nd finished the same way they qualified. I qualified 4th behind those two and a 911 SC. I grabbed 3rd from the 911 early in the race and held off one of the most agressive pursuits I've ever experienced. I received the weekend's Worker's Choice Award, I assume for the pass I made to get 3rd, and some creative maneuvering through lapped traffic to maintin my position.

All in all it was a very successful weekend for the 968 and its forerunner, the 944 S2.

Fabulous Jim! [Image: 2thumbs.gif]

For the edification of us race laymans, what kind of vehicle competition are you up against? You mentioned 911's. What other makes and models?

I know it has a lot to do with the driver, but please feed our fantasy that the 968 is the best balanced car on the road! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

This was a PCA race, so the cars were all Porsches. The stock classes are based on manufacturer published power to weight ratios. The 968 competes in F class which includes power to weight ratios between 11.64 and 14.11 lbs/hp. F class includes the following cars:

81-83 911SC (Euro)

84-86 911 Carrera

84-86 911 Carrera (Turbo-look)

85-86 928S

86-88 944 Turbo

87-88 944S (Club Sport/Firehawk)

87-89 911 Carrera

89-91 944S2

89-94 911C4

90-94 911 C2/C4 (Turbo body)

96-97 Boxster

98-04 Boxster

05 Boxster

92-95 968

The stock classes run from B through K. At the extremes in the Saturday race we ran were two '04 911 GT3's in B class, and many I class '83-'87 944's. For some reason F class seems to be the most popular and competitive class in PCA Club Racing, consistently drawing more cars than any other class.

Jim:

Nice job. I expected you, Gary and Terry to be on the podium but it's anybody's guess about the order. The 968's are really starting to shine.

I look forward to joining you guys ...hopefully at the Carolina's.

Where you guys off to next?

Next up is Watkins Glen in a couple of weeks. Some of the east coast F guys are very fast there, so this one will definitely be a challenge.

    Jim,

Do you know John Paton?

I believe he will be there in his speed yellow 968. He's very quick at the Glen, actually everwhere.

I don't know John, but I see that he is registered for the race. His car is listed as a 968 Firehawk running in E class. I just looked at the schedule, and E and F are in different groups, so I won't be on the track with him.
