Should I be concerned about dirty tailpipe?
#1

Within a couple hundred miles of driving after I wash my car, the bottom part of the chrome tailpipe (the bottom third of the circle at exit) is sooty/dark.  I don't notice any smoke in the exhaust.  I haven't asked anyone to follow me down the road to see if they see any smoke.

I don't see any oil consumption on the dipstick.

Is this normal or an indicator of a problem?

My tailpipe is constantly dirty...I frequently need to wipe it, and the entire quarter...

dry soot on the tailpipe is a mixture that is too rich.  this happens a lot with some performance chips, or if your O2 sensor is bad.

The O2 sensor was recently replaced, so it should be good.  I do have an RSB Stage 1 chip.

each tuner does things differently.  he likes to add fuel, rather than timing, so, if you are stepping on it a lot, it will be rich.  nothing to worry about, but that's likely what's going on.

if it's wet or slimey though, that's a different story.

That's good to know, as I have noticed the same symptom on my tailpipe also. So who doesn't step on it a lot??? Isn't that why we have these cars?

Oh, RS Barn stage 1 chip also.

I don't typically drive fast.  I accelerate aggressively (after the car's warmed up) beyond the speed limit, then I back off and cruise till the next opportunity to enjoy the higher rpms .  Then I repeat as necessary.  Big Grin
