boy, is that a polarized issue - i have some friends deeply involved in the political aspects of this, on both sides too



it started out as a ploy to legalize it under the guise of "medical use" - pretty thin - but it opened a pandora's box nobody was prepared for



i don't use it, though i tried it when i was younger (didn't everybody) - i never liked it - i don't hang out with people who do either, even though its use is very common in my business - i won't hire people who use it though - without exception they have always been less dependable (yes, i can tell who does and who doesn't) - my shows always suffer



that being said, i don't begrudge anybody their buzz in their own house, and really don't have a problem with people who like it or want to use it - but i don't want to see it legalized until there is a testing method the police can use at the side of the road, and it is in place - there is no way anybody can convince me that driving stoned is a good thing, and just like alcohol, people "think" they are fine, but countless tests and studies prove otherwise



my position is live and let live, just stay off the road, and like cigarettes, don't do in public places



i'll be watching the show though

Well Bob I suspect you might understand I can only agree with part of what you said! What about the kids? Guys for those of you who don't know I am in the rehab biz. I also agree do what you want but stay off the road. Course my opinion expands from that some!

i get that part of the issue too, and i don't know where to fall on it - it's no different though than other influential things that kids might pick up on - where do you draw the line on what kids might experience at home? are we going to tell people how to raise their kids?



in a free society, we have to allow the personal choices, no matter how we might feel about them, or how damaging they may be - but, we can regulate how they affect the public

could not care less who smokes pot and how much, just as i don't care who drinks and how much..as long as they stay off the roads, or off work when under the influence !

Some of you already know my story about the impact drugs had on my son and my family. As far as I am concerned there is no case that can be made for legalization. Marijuana for medical use is a sham. My son was able to pay some crooked MD to issue him the script necessary for him purchase marijuana for "medical use".

The gov't already regulates our lives through a variety of laws and regulations. They do tell us how to raise our kids. Vaccines and schooling come to mind. Kids don't experience at home under the watchful eyes of their parents. They rip off their pills and steal their booze and find a friends home whose parents are out or a safe place to do it. Want to drive a car, pay for the right to take a test for a drivers license. Want to own a car. Buy it, pay sales tax and register it with your state, for a fee. Children can and do need to learn how to makes decisions and choices. They will make mistakes, this is part of learning. Kids mimic the behavior of their parents. If the behavior is wrong and illegal, then they will have been encouraged to make these mistakes by the only people who are supposed to have their best interst at heart. Encouraging your kid to engage in illegal activity is wrong, stupid and can cause you kids to be taken away from you. Another consequence flowing from let people(kids make decisions)make decisions as long as it's in your home.Illegality of weed is a volatile issue. My point here regards kids. I see this everyday and obviously have a strong opinion. No offense Bob!

I get the focus is on children here, so what I am wondering is how is legal marijuana any different than legal alcohol, as far as the

potential influence and/or effect on youth is concerned ? ( this is a question, btw, not a position.. ) In other words, is pot more addictive than alcohol or proven to lead to harder drugs more so than alcohol ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



So just curious about that aspect, and leaving aside all the other aspects of enforcement, logistics, taxation, etc, etc that are separate issues themselves

Not sure where there is legal alcohol for kids? Are children getting scripts for legal pot? I don't live in a State where this happens. At the risk of provoking a firestorm, both as are cigarettes are gateways. Behavior is more the issue than pot or alcohol. We have treated people who smoked pot for a long time and become pyscotic. We use thorazine to detox these folks. These are very rare but do happen. The point is kids graduate to harder drugs after starting with alcohol or pot. Stealing their parents pills is very common. Putting them in a bowl at a party and taking what they pull without knowing the pill or its usage is common. Alcohol is easy to get in most households. Not many kids are straight alcoholics. Most will do anything for a buzzz.Point is not which is more addictive. both can cause problems and both can lead to harder drugs.

again though, it does not matter whether or not we think certain behavior is wrong or harmful - as a free society, we must allow it within the home - we cannot enter the home to dictate what someone does there, as long as it stays there - this is not a police state - personal freedom is at the root of our society, right or wrong, good or bad



that being said, i think we need stiffer penalties on those that allow their children to adopt their bad behavior - we don't hold parents responsible enough for the child's behavior

We already enter homes for bad behavior. In Pa. the local agencies are called Children and Youth. These people can take kids out of a house for certain types of behaviors. I am sure you have a like agency in Ca.! I also agree in the sanctity of the home. Are you back?

I don't live in a State where this happens" I can only speak to California, but the answer is yes. $500 will get you a passable fake ID and as I noted earlier $200 to a crooked doctor will get you the script. I don't think anybody believes that all those folks hanging out at Medicinal Marijuana outlets are ill, or maybe they are just the healthiest looking cancer patients you ever saw.



RAP is correct, chronic heavy use turned my son into psychotic, abusive, violent individual. I have the legal bills to prove it. And yes, he went onto bigger and better things, mostly pills. He came by the house after I had some surgery done, to see me while my wife was away and helped himself to all of the pain medication that my doctor had prescribed for me. I was left in severe pain with no medication until my wife returned home and took me to the emergancy room.



Despite all of this, my son did turn his life around. He is clean and sober 4 years now. But it was an awful 10 years to get him there.

i am back



i take issue with those agencies - i happen to believe in corporal punishment - it sure worked on me - those agencies would have you believe that a spanking is child abuse - obviously this is not the case with all of them, but we have swung too far in one direction, and need to come back



i'm not for a minute saying that i am a proponent of drug use - i am only saying that this is a very slippery slope, and we continually give away freedoms we can never get back, and that we need to stay out of the house, and regulate things once outside the door, and strictly enforce laws (which is not happening now), putting the responsibility for the child's behavior on the parent - if the kid gets into trouble, jail the parent - that will force parents to keep an eye on their kids, who currently are allowed to run amuck



wow - i sure didn't think i'd get this far in

I agree with everything but jail the parent. Perhaps if we allowed the child to suffer a consequence instead of having the parents attack police or educators, kids would understand consequences for choices taken. I was raised in a upper middle class professional family with all the benefits that come with this. As oldest I was watched and was the kid they learned on .despite that I managed to do many of these things we are talking about. I did it not my parents. I was responsible for my actions, not my parents. The nuns used to whack me with a ruler.I learned how to fly below the radar quite well. Don't like nuns though! My parents used the spoon. Worked for me. Tailored my behavior to avoid that. Responsibilitiy and consequences are the keys. They work. They always have. It's just the liberal pseudo intelligencia has drifted us away under the guise of personal rights. Hello Attila step aside I would like to move to your right! Should not have started me. Are you Ca. lol - this is good stuff



i'd agree with suffering consequences, as long as they SUFFERED - cleaning walls or picking up trash is not suffering - however, that does not do anything to the parents who are the root cause of bad behavior - we have to hold them responsible for every minute of the childhood - forcing them to closely monitor the child is the only way to control the child



unfortunately in this nanny/latchkey society, this becomes very difficult



like i said, i sure don't have the answers, but i am sick and tired of the local kids calling the cops on the parents and claiming abuse because they took away their cell phone (true story)

Chris I'm sorry to hear of your son but you cannot blame pot for any ones addictions anymore that you can blame beer for all the alcoholics. It all comes down to the person (and not their parents or society).



Just to note I'm with most of you here, what you do at home is your biz just don't bring it around work or drive. (that goes for drugs, booze or any other mind altering substance)

Just to slightly alter this discussion, anyone know of a good 12 step program for those poor souls(me) building garages? Daily order changes, visions of granduer. Most common comment. Nice looking house. And all of this started because of a 92 white 968 coupe!!!
