Max rim diameter
#1

Has anyone put 19" rims on a car? There are probably good reason why not to (ride quality, poorer handling) but it seems possible with the wheel calculator. I only ask this because there is a set of lightweight wheels I like and they only come in 19 and 20.

True they did. Then they bolted 18s to the factory turbo cars.....go figure. Flash, are you 17 or 18?

they did, but not to the stock components - they beefed things up for the turbos

i am on 18s, but i really worry about the spindles and hubs - i kept the weight down, with the front rim only weighing 20lbs, but the added grip of the wider tire, let alone the better compounds of today's tires, adds a lot of stress to the components - their concern is valid

as long as you keep the weight of the rim down, and don't overload the components with really wide stuff, you could be fine - the tires weigh about the same in a 19 as an 18 in the same size, so it's going to be all about the rim weight

you will be on a 30 or 35 series tire though, which will require soft dampening shocks and struts if you don't want your teeth rattling out of your head

Ok I admit it - the much-maligned 19" 'lobster claw' is my favorite Porsche wheel. If it were available in 18" I'd probably get 'em - unless they're super heavy.

I'm still on the fence about 19's on the 968. They do look big, but if the car is lowered enough, and the tires are 'correct' ie. low profile enough... I don't know, this red car looks pretty good to me.

Those don't look all that bad, I think one has to keep the design simple and the out of proportion look would be abated.

one thing i don't like about a lot of larger wheels, is how tiny they make the brakes look

I entertained 19" just because I loved these wheels and 19 was the smallest diameter, but they were too close for comfort and the fronts didn't clear the hub center.[Image: cool.gif]

I was actually looking at those "lobster claw" wheels for my 968 before I went with 17" Boxster S2 wheels instead. I'm not currently tracking the car at all, and I have to say that going from the stock 16" wheels to the 17" made a massive improvement in handling with a really negligible decrease in comfort. I think 19s would be a pretty hard ride.

Ha - I agree Flash. Even 18's make the standard 968 brakes look small.

The wheels on the red car in the pic above are "lobster claws" and the 19 inch 997S versions are 8" with 57 offset Rears 11" with 67 offset

There's a set for sale on RL.

Heard back from OZ and they have no plans to make 18" Ultraleggera HLT rims. I'm not planning on changing rims this year anyway so I'll keep looking for lighter rims that look decent. Hard when your only choice is 5*130 and you don't want to spend 4K+.

Thanks, I had looked at those originally buy they were just too far from "purdy" for me; the Ultraleggerra has a little more class. I just with the Veloce 3.6 wheels didn't weight as much as my C2's

Wow, they are really quite light, althugh with a wide 18" tyre will probably be over 20kg each ?

I've just changed the OE porsche cup 17" Wheels for Boxster 1 piece sport classic 17" wheels, (7" front / 8.5" Rear) and with tyres 205/50/17 & 235/45/17 total weight 72KG for the set, which is 18KG less than the cups!!!!

You can imagine the car drives totally different, sweet turn in on narrower 7" rims with nice square 205mm tread width, compared to the 7.5" Cups on 225/45/127, which use to tramline quite a bit! And the previous 9" rear on 255/40/17 was far too big and heavy, compared to the a non standard size 235/45/17, which is slightly taller than stock and hence raises the rear ride height and more importantly gives me a 45 profile for compliance, better comfort, but also better wet handling.......something in wet wales we have a bit of right now!!

I have actually dropped the 19" idea since I found Forgestar F14's. In the 18" * 8.5 config you get a 17.6 lbs wheel! If I run those all round I will save 30 lbs over my stock 17" C2's. Rubber is not ready to be replaced yet so maybe next year.

DaveN: Those F14's do look nicely. I also have C2 wheels and the 30lbs you might be saving sounds great to me. If you ever buy them, post a picture please.
