Making the cab top quieter
#1

So since I'm getting ready to put a few miles on the car in the next week or so, I decided I would tackle the noisy and not so sealed top. The main rattle that was annoying me was where the cab top meets the windshield. I started with adjusting the locking mechanism so it would clamp down with a little more force, but that didn't help the rattle. The issue is when I hit bumps and the top rocks side to side, the locating pin is clanking around inside the receiver. I noticed the pin doesn't actually go all the way down inside the receiver, it's far from it, so it has room to rock back and forth and clank around. So my simple fix for that was to put a zip tie in the receiver, which makes for a much tighter fit for the pin in the receiver eliminating the noises.

This fix may or may not work for those of you still in power mode for the top as it may get in the way of the micro switch in the receiver, but you could probably position the zip tie away from it. All you have to do is loosen up the trim panel enough so you can get the zip tie in and your done.

Take a look at astrode's thread. Do a search on "dashboard rattle". Sounds like it's possibly the same thing.

Sort of, I did tighten down the latches and that fixed the downward pressure issue, but that didn't fix the left to right movement the top makes when it hit's bumps. It's metal on metal and moves around, wouldn't have thought Porsche would do something like that without a plastic insert or something to stop the metal on metal noise.

interesting - my pins are quite snug in the receivers - they actually rub as they go in, with no side to side play whatsoever

i'm having a hard time envisioning what you did - how is the zip tie attached to the receiver? got a pic?

I could take a pic, basically I put it thru the hole out the bottom and put the zip tie together.

I suppose mine could be a little worn out maybe?

After being such a smart ass, I decided to check my pins and found the same slop. Sorry.

I will get some 3/8" and 1/2" black shrink tubing and shrink it onto the pins for a snug fit. Next rattle hunt is in the passenger door.

The shrink tubing was my first attempt, I thought it would work well to stop the noise. The problem is they worked there way off the pin pretty quickly and just jammed up in the bottom.

Thanks for the info. Maybe adhesive first, like 3M automotive adhesive; or that "stick to itself" tape that they advertise on TV??

Trying to think of a more visually pleasant solution.

You really can't see it, only if the top is down and if you know it is there. I probably ought to price out the cost of new pins and receivers, but I probably don't want to know what that is.

Had the same thing a year ago. Took fish tank tubing and put small 1"-2" piece on pins. It fit snugly and never came off, noise gone. probably any small diameter poly vinyl type hose will work.

Anybody seen the stuff you dip tool handles in and it coats it with the rubbery skin that comes on many "store bought" tools? I bet that would work as well.

Just a thought. I have not tried this myself.

Discovered that the rattle on the pass side, that I have been hunting down after fixing the top rattle, is from the pass seat back. When un latched and sitting forward, the metal rattle that I hear when going over bumps, stops.

Any idea what is in the seat back latch mechanism that is causing this?

might be a loose motor

Just dug in a bit. The rattle seems to be the seat rattling on the track, from side to side. Any adjustment?

New top problem. It howls like the hounds of hell at 90+ The rubber seal is sticking up just a mm or so into the air and man it's loud. Removed the interior trim piece and inspected the latch mechanisms. Everything looks OK. The rubber itself looks OK.

We were on a trip so we addressed it with what we had in the car - a 968 forums business card. Shoved a bit in between the pin and receiver and it quieted down. Clearly not the right way to fix this.

Sounds like maybe the same problem bandit had initially that he fixed by "adjusting the locking mechanism". Any tips on how to adjust the locking mech? I have yet to pull the top trip piece in between the A-pillar covers.

Spent a little more time on this. When the top is closed you can both pull on it from underneath or push from above and it moves 1 to 2 mm. When moving at 80+ that is the difference between quiet and howling. You can see a small gap towards the pass side

Removed the trim panel and checked out the receiver. Both were tight. The pivoting rollers are not adjustable. There is a small gap between the roller and receiver (yellow arrow) on the pass side when closed.

So we loosed the receivers (red arrow) and made sure that the top was fully closed, then tightened the bolts. No improvement.

Any ideas?
