the part number listed as the "main bow" is 941.561.503.10 - it is the center section of that bow - there are corners and sides

Is this question suggesting that, after a quiet period, someone has suffered the regrettable main bow fracture? If so, there's lots of experience out here.

The fact is both my bows were broken when I purchased the car I just got around to getting the part. In your opinion would I be better off going to the Porsche dealer and have them install it or would a regular mechanic be able to handle this job.

When my driver's side bow broke, my Porsche dealer told me that they don't do top work, they farm it out to a specialist. So, with their cooperation, they ordered the parts for me (that was before I knew about Sunset Imports) and gave me the contact at the top/upholstery shop so that I could make the arrangements directly. I don't think I'd go to "a regular mechanic", although it may be that a sufficiently capable mechanic is all that's needed. Since my failure occurred only three weeks after I purchased the car, I didn't look at the assembly that closely - I just needed to get it fixed pronto.

are you in the los angeles area by chance?

as for who to do the work, this is not a job for someone who has not done it before - i would trust it only to a shop that does tops - i would also make them assume responsibility for the work, and any damage

unfortunately, unless the top itself is new, they probably won't touch it - it will involve complete disassembly to repair and readjust - putting a used top back on is never a good idea, and i have not yet found a shop that has been willing to assume the responsibility for installation of a used top

it's a lot like used windshields - they'll try it, but if it breaks, it's on you

there might be a complete frame for sale - try boost feen (member here)

You might also want to try calling some of the Porsche dismantlers for the part. That is where I got mine a much lower price then Sunset. They are not cheap.. Also after you get over the sticker shock of two bows, think aobut leaving the top in manual mode, the power mode is killer.

I think very higly of my mechanic, but the I am a little sceptical of him performing my top. Does anyone who or recommend a shop that can replace my Main bows which I had puchased separatekand replace my top in Northen New Jersey (Bergen County preferred). Thanks.

I live in Bergen County but work in Mercer County. I had my main bow replaced by a shop on Rt. 1 in the Lawrenceville area. If this would be of interest to you, I probably can dig out the work order with the details. No matter what, though, I'm sure I can get the name of the shop. They specialize in interiors and tops, and have done classic car restoration work. I was very pleased with the results, and they did not remove the top to do the bow replacement. I did not, however, ask them to get the top working in power mode. When the breakage occurred, I went into "manual" and have been there ever since.

Don't rule out welding the broken ones. Mine was repaired over 1 1\2 years ago. Still going strong and went back to automatic mode. $30 to welder was much better than new. Did the work myself and replaced the rear window at the same time. Not just any welder can do it, I'm thinking the material is cast aluminum maybe? Any welder should be able to tell what type of welder is needed. Good luck.

Thanks to all that replied. I purchased 2 bows relatively cheap at a dismantler. Anchorman, thanks for the heads up for the shop at rt.1 but it may be too far from me, I will make some calls in the Bergen County area, if I cannot find a place I will touch base with you for the info of the shop you hada it done.
