low octane ok?
#21

as you know, none of my P-cars have over 30,000 original miles!!!

carbon deposits, I don't know.

I luv my cars and enjoy "lavishing" them with the finest lubricants and best fuel that can be bought at the pump. Locally for me, that fuel would be 100 octane race fuel. Yea!

Crappy local gas can cause issues for cars that sit (and mine do sit!). The 100 octane race fuel doesn't break down and I personally feel a seat-of-the-pants improvement.

Yes, this isn't very scientific. However, it's my opinion (right or wrong).

my 2 cents,

Porsche

Yep, at <30K miles, carbon deposits are not likely to be a major problem for you! It can't hurt to run the highest octane fuel you can find, so if the price doesn't bother you, go for it. At least you have the satisfaction of knowing you're paying the same price for 100 octane that our friends in Europe and elsewhere are paying for 87.

Yes, I treat my ride to 100 octane once in awhile too - there IS a noticeable difference. I priced it about a month ago and it was $6.78/g. Now it's probably $7.25!

Carbon build-up is a product of the driving conditions more so than the mileage. If you have a new car and use primarily for city [stop-n-go] driving, it''ll soon carbon up. And, visa-versa, if you have a high-mileage car that's driven primarily at highway speeds, there's much less chance of carbon build-up. All cars benefit from a blast down the highway...

still can't believe 100 octane at a Union 76 not too far away from my house is only 5.99 ( yesterday June 8th 08 ) when 91 runs very close to 5.00 now at many stations.. I notice some difference when I fill up half tank with 100 ( I never tried the full one at 100 and am really hesitant to do that ) although I can't say that difference is "day and night" .. just a slight one.

i tested this a while back - there is a gain to be had, up to a point - then it actually gets worse - up to about 94 octane, it shows gains - after that, things start to get hot, with no power increases - i guess the system can only advance the timing so far

now, if somebody wanted to design a chip to run on 100 octane, and you wanted to bump the compression up, AND you wanted to pay for the 100 octane, you could probably get another 10hp out of it

by the way - the last time i bought 100 octane it was $7.99/gal - i'll let you know later this week what i paid for it
