with all the talk lately about hopping these cars up, chips, water injection, etc, i thought i'd post some little tidbits of info on modern engines with engine management systems, for those who don't already know this stuff, so folks can best take advantage of the mods - there are limits to some of these, but here are the general rules - do the math - have some fun:
an increase in ambient air temperature of 42 degrees farenheit raises the octane requirement of the engine by 0.5
an increase in water jacket temp from the 8 o'clock line to the 10 o'clock line requires an octane increase of 2
every 1000 ft of altitude allows a decrease in octane requirement of about .35
for every 20 degrees farenheit you reduce the intake temps, you gain 1% in horsepower
for every 1% in octane, you gain 1% in horsepower
