Losing Power - Variocam question
#1

Hi Everyone,

It's been a long time since my last post. I have a 92 Cab and am in the process of restoring it back to its original glory.

Let me state my problem.. Starts and runs good. Under no load, seems to rev decent but when you go to drive it, it seems like there isn't much power.. when I press on the gas pedal I get induction noise but no real power. Also, when I reach about 4300 to 4500 I get engine ping and have to back off the pedal. After setting the timing and very sure that mechanically things are ok. I'm not so confident that the Solenoid is doing its job. Its almost as if the car isn't retarding the timeing as I increase RPM's and if I understand it correctly, it should begin to retard timing at 4500 rpm to allow the engine more power to achieve the higher rpms.

I'm looking for any advice from this point forward. I'm thinking it could be the solendoid or it could be the ECU. Has anyone else had this issue and if so what did you do to fix it?

Here is a little more background on what i've done to the car. Since my last post i've completely rebuilt the engine and clutch system. While everything was apart, I replaced things like water pumpt etc. So i get it all back together and I painstakenly put the engine in time... followed insturctions to a "t". I was hoping that my original problem would be taken care of and that was lots of induction noise but no power. After all of this, i'm down to wondering if my variocam system is actually working. I've looked at just about everything regarding that system. The cams look good, chain and pads. I've added air to the system while timing and I can see the piston advance and move the cams. I applied 12V to the variocam solenoid and can hear it click but i'm not sure its actually working.

I appreciate any help

it would not be the variocam, as that advances the intake timing, but does nothing to the ignition timing

i am betting Hall Sender.

I replaced the Hall sender during the rebuild as well.  Unless I got a bad one.  The other thing I forgot to mention is that in my test drive the car drives the same whether I have the variocam solenoid plugged in or not.

you can insert a test light and see if it is working

sounds simple.. would I just test it under no load and rev engine until I see light come on?  Do you have have procedure to do that.. i'm thinking at what point should I see the light come on kind a thing.  Btw  - thanks a ton for your suggestions.

it's activated by oil pressure, and engaged by rpm.  it should come on at about 1500 rpm, and go off at about 5k

again though, it should not create ignition knock, as it is not a part of the ignition system.

what fuel are you running?  this car won't run on regular you know

Thanks for the information.  I only run 93 or higher Octane it has never seen anything less.

Could my ECU be the issue for ignition timing?  I've been fighting this same problem ever since I purchased the vehicle.

because you haven't filled out your profile info, i can't tell if you are in the states or not, so i don't know if the 93 is ron+mon/2 or just ron.  if you are here in the states, then that 93 is fine.  if you are in europe, it's too low.

it could be the ECU, if you have a poorly designed aftermarket chip in there

it could also be the MAF.  have you tried cleaning it with MAF cleaner?

a tired O2 sensor could also be causing it to be lean, which could result in ping and knock

Ok.. good points.. I'm in Ohio.  The ECU is stock as far as I can tell.  I have a spare MAF that I can try.  I could also try a new o2.  I would have thought that it would throw codes but maybe not..  I'll fill out my profile so you can see more info.

did you do a blink test or hook it up to a hammer or durametric?
