Loose Shifter
#1

I have just purchased a 1995 968 Cabriolet. I love the car but just working on a few minor things to make the car perfect. My biggest complaint is that the shifter feels loose. It shifts gears fine but just not as firm solid feeling like in my 944. I can grab the shifter and wiggle it around when it is in gear. Anyone have a similar problem or have an idea what to look for? I haven't taken it apart yet to see whats wrong yet. Just wanted to get an idea what to look for.

could be the lower bushing or the shaft bushings

that being said, i have always thought the stock shifter assembly was sloppy. that's why i came up with the short shifter kit.

And a lovely creation it is! I can heartily endorse the short shift kit. Relatively cheap, well designed, easy to follow instructions, easy to install, and it works! What more could one ask for?

Mine was so loose you can pull it up several inches. I was worried it was disconnected below the car. After pulling up the boot I could see the easy fix. The shift knob slides down over a rectangle rubber grommet. It alone should be firmly between two tabs on the metal stick. Its very easy to see where it should go and the shift knob's lower section should have a metal clip. It that has gone missing look around the base of the shifter area. You can keep tension on it with a small pair of plyers then push down firmly. Let the clip pop in place and your issue hopefully will be finsihed.

After reading all the issues with vibration I can see why it was designed this way. Acts as a shock absorber.

I am back driving my '94 after selling the '92. I realize now that the shifter is very sloppy left to right when in gear, up to about 2". This makes hitting the correct gear a little more difficult than it was in my '92. I installed Design 1 short shift kit in both cars, so everything up front is solid. Is there some linkage in the back that is loose, or broken? I have not climbed under there to inspect it yet. So difficult to get my 210 pounds under there without a lift.

Is is slop you feel or a week return spring? There is a spring on the side of the transxle behind a bolt where the rod enters the case, maybe it has become 2 springs?.
