I drive a 13 year old car with 91,000 miles. In two months since purchase, I have replaced motor mounts, wheel bearings, tires, sunroof gears and temp sensor. I have chipped, airbox-modded and replaced my head unit. I have spent $2500 and plan to spend more. My car needs a paint job and has dash cracks. And I love this car more than any vehicle, new or used, that I have ever owned. I understand now. I am out of town for a week and think about getting home and hitting a particular stretch of twisty country road. I think about the feeling in my lower back as I am pulled forward with a throaty 6000 RPM growl. While driving a premium rental car in a strange city, I look at the opulent dashes and overchromed trim, missing the sparse and utilitarian functionality of my 90's mobile kissing the century mark. Driving in the silence of heavy sound isolation and cushy suspension of my rental, I feel more like I am pointing a bubble than driving a car.



I drive a 13 year old car with 91,000 miles. And frankly, I can't imagine not owning it. I know with certainty, this car will be mine until it is no longer road worthy. And even after that, I cannot imagine not having a Porsche in my garage. I am not a rich man. I can't begin to fathom dropping 100K on a vehicle. Still, this car has taught me that, sad as it may be, the general public finds a way to lose perspective on these incredible machines. That persistence and dedication still bring rewards.

I know the feeling... many people made some very odd comments to me regarding my "new" car purchase being a car with 120k miles on it for the price I paid. Many said "but you could get a brand new car for only a little more"... it's just not the same.

I am not a writer... just a hack. But words do flow easily for me when I am impassioned. In case you couldn't tell, this new ride has definitely tapped into that passion. I have a weird tie already with this car. The only way I can think to describe it, is that this car has soul. If the interior feels a little dated, it only adds to my pleasure. The ride is anything but dated. And I swear this car demands certain music, if that makes any sense. Often, the only music I want to hear is the sound of this fine machine. But when music does enter the scene, I can't imagine this car cruising a summer day with the sun panel out and an elavator music soundtrack. While she has accepted everything from Smashing Pumpkins to Moby, my car seems most at home with Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and other Stax or Motown artists. It is a timeless feeling. Don't ask me to explain. I really don't think I can.

Saxman, that is one of my favorite late-night hobbies. Going out when everyone is sleeping to wash my baby at a deserted coin-op.

that's what I did... there's a nice 24 hr coin op about a mile from here... ran over there, busted out the buckets, etc... had one cop drive by somewhat slowly... probably trying to figure out what kind of crazy person I was

Saxman, I have actually expanded my late-night car washing hobby a bit further by creating a spreadsheet of coin-op locations within an hour or two of my house. They are notoriously hard to find in the phone book so I just add a new one to the spreadsheet whenever I spot one while driving during the day. If the weather is pleasant, I may choose a location that includes a top-down, one/two hour loop, perhaps with a stop at a quiet picnic area on the shore of a local lake with a shiny 968.

Great story, well told. My '93 coupe has 160k+ miles and so many replacements and additions and upgrades that it probably qualifies techically as a new car. Well, maybe not. Yeah, I'm hooked, too, as are most of us.

Thanks for the kind words. I have been gone the past few days, in Montreal for my job. I discovered a really high Porsche concentration up there. And not just Boxsters and Cayennes. I saw a good number of variously aged models, including a really pretty gold 944 that looked very loved. But it's nice to be home. Already looking forward to a nice run tomorrow <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I gotta agree. But the comment made me think of a fun thread. It could be like that Chuck Norris site. We could post comments like:



"A parked Porsche once got a speeding ticket for simply looking fast. It was clocked at 130."



"When once traveled by a Porsche, Lombard Street in San Fancisco felt what it was like to be straight for the first time in its existence"



I know it is silly. I have a part of my brain that will always be 11.
