it's a bit more than 1hp, but you are correct - that is exactly why i switched to redline from mobil 1 - it's a better oil



the extra power and free revving, as well as lower operating temps were just added bonuses

if i had to guess, it's the 3-4 that redline says is typical, but probably not the 7-8 that you can get from knife-edging and doing a windage tray - feels like just an overall increase in willingness to rev



the quicker reaction of the pressure guage on startup, and the lower oil temps are of more interest to me than the power - those mean longer engine life and better protection

I found that under race conditions, my engine uses virtually no Redline compared to Mobil 1. For example, after a 4 race meeting, the engine needs no Redline, but 1/2 litre if I use Mobil 1.

I'm not smart enough to understand these charts, but maybe they will help. I've stayed with 15W50 because of the high mileage on my car [145,000] and my concern that the lighter oils might cause a leak. I don't know if that is valid concern or not.

It is almost impossible now to get Redline in Oz, so am looking at Royal Purple. The only grades they import here are 10W-40 and 20W-50.

Climate here is moderate (lows of 40F and highs of 100F).



Any thoughts on which grade to use ?

(am leaning towards 10W-40)

I've had to shops tell me to stay with 15W-50 because of the higher mileage on my car. Is there any merit to that recommendation? Should leaks be a concern when moving to lighter oils with higher mileage engines?

from everything i have read, it's not the change in the weight of the oil that brings about leaks, but rather the formula change - the seals bond with one formula, and may or may not do the same with another - this is particularly prevalent when going from dino to synthetic



that being said, i can only recall 2 people with 968s who developed leaks after switching from dino, and none after switching to another synthetic

Recently purchased a case of Red Line 10W40 from Amazon, free shipping, no taxes, and no using gas to the local Auto Zone hunting for oil. Just order and had it delivered to my door step.



Oh and also ordered two K&N Oil Filters to go with it.

Reading one of the recent threads on the other forum, more specifically the information contained in the links to various articles and blogs from Porsche mechanics I'm becoming a bit concerned that the 5-40 ( Amsoil ) I use is too light - according to the articles there was far more pronounced and premature cam wear in older Porsches ( 944s, 928s ) which used lighter syn oils, as opposed to those who used 15 +.. and they're talking about dozens of samples used to validate that finding.

Maybe to give the benefit of the doubt to those findings, and to be playing it safe I'll either switch to Redline 10-40, OR, put in 3Qs Amsoil 5-40 and 3Qs of Mobil One 15-50 (or Royal Purple 15-50, or Redline, etc.. )..

Anyone see issues with a "custom blend" of two different brands and / or weights ? [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif[/img]

I'd suggest consulting with an expert in the field, like Terry Dyson, before concocting a potential witches brew of different brand oils. I just had an oil analysis done by Terry, and it was extremely enlightening. It's not cheap at $99, but well worth it. He may be willing to make a recommendation as to at least the weight of oil you should be using without doing an analysis, especially if you explain your current predicament. I've taken the Mobil 1 out of my car and replaced it with Brad Penn 20W50, (concrerned about the zinc and phosphate issue). So far it's been just fine.
