Tell me what is that awful sound?
#1

Greetings 968 Forums.com members,

I recently started to get an awful noise coming from my 968 when I start it up. It usually goes away once I start to drive the car. Sometimes it will make the noise at a stop light. Obviously, I am making an appointment to take it in and be serviced. Any idea as to what this sound is?

Audio of the noise

I recently had the steering rack rebuilt and new motor mounts installed. Prior to this, I had a new clutch and flywheel installed as well as the starter replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds very much like a belt that is slipping. If you haven't changed them lately, it's time.

Sometimes it's not the belt, but possibly the siezing of the alternator, PS pump, or A/C. If all of these are working fine, then I'd lean towars a simple inexpensive belt change.

+1 Belt.
Easy way to figure out which one it is, spray a bit of water on it while it's running, when you hit the right one it will change pitch.
Then adjust/replace as needed.

I vote belt also. Have another car that will make this sound if the alternator belt is too loose. I couldn't confirm by data/tests, but I always suspected that when the car is first started, the battery is low (because it just drained to turn the starter motor, or because it was sitting), and thus the regulator is passing full power, thus higher electromagnetic resistance (drag) in the alternator. Or maybe it is the higher load of a slightly drained battery (higher amps), not specifically the regulator. After a few seconds the need for new power from the alternator is reduced, and therefore it doesn't have as much drag, and the belt stops slipping. Again, just a theory, anybody who thinks I am fantasizing, happy to be corrected .
