Need to restore headliner
#1

Hi All!

I need to restore my head liner.

the previous owner has made a fantastic job

ruining the fabric.

My question is: Is it a job for a noob like me?

and how do I obtain the head liner, have done some Google search

but I would be super grateful if any of you could shake of some of your experience!

Peter

My headliner looks different than yours, there's a wide trim piece that spans the width at the rear edge by the hatch. Was there a change from 92 to 94?

Maybe that's because he doesn't have a sunroof.  The trim piece hides the access to the sun roof motors and cable IIRC.

You can buy aftermarket ones, or you can find the original in the PET, illustration 807-10: http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/ori...ATALOG.pdf

I haven't done it myself, but it looks like a job for experienced hands if you want it to be flawless...

Did the PO keep his cats in there?

Ok makes sense. I erroneously thought the sunroof was standard on all coupes.

Hi Bulti

Well the PO must have been a utter ..... He wanted to get the the nut n bolts that

holds the rear boot lid!

Hmmm I am not sure I am up for the job, if its that difficult!

on the other hand it needs to be done, right now it looks bad!

None sunroofs are considered better as track days cars as they are more ridgit

I would like to have it though, as it would fit my toupee just nicely!

Still if someone has experience in changing the head liner, it would fantastic!

That is one best left to the auto upholstery shop. I just checked with one to replace the covering on the moonroof sliding cover on a Jag XJ8. They would completely remove the headliner to fix the cover and then replace all for just under $400 so not too bad in my book.

Well, if you are brave enough you could give it a shot. I on the other hand would follow Ryan's advice though...

In any case, IF you are brave, post some pics :-))

I've done it in 2 pickup trucks and the hardest part was getting it out the side doors, I imagine with the 968 coupe you could get it out through the hatch much easier. On my pickups once it was out I just used a wire wheel attachment on the compressor to clean up all the leftover glue and glued the new stuff on. Once again the tricky part was going through the door to get it back in.

For my trucks I just used head liner material from a local fabric store, for a porsche I would look for something a little better, might want to check with an auto upholstery shop they will usually sell it to you.

there is no frame on a 968 its just glued up in position with the rubber bits and a few odd screw holding it in place,

that is on a sunroof model, I guess it would be totally different with a non sunroof car

genuine linings are available from Porsche but in black only, at £197.00 not sure what that is in dollars but close to $260

477 867 503 5ve is black

they are also available for M650 sunroof cars, same price, they have black and cobalt blue still in stock

This is for a sunroof 944 but it should be identical to a 968 sunroof. For a non sunroof car it's probably very similar. Toward the bottom you can see when the headliner is out its just the vinyl material with no backing like on most cars.

I need a need head liner in Magenta also. I have a question on the hatch there are 2 gaskets that are on the body of the car where the top of hatch fit into when closed. I ordered what I thought was a new one for the passenger side but when it came it had the indentation on the left side of piece. I thought they sent me the wrong one so I called and he said it was the passenger side??? BUT it seems to fit the driver side of the car?? On your car is the indentation on the outside or inside of the hatch? Thanks

One side is now NLA so you have to use the wrong side on one side of the car

WOW  thought that was the problem. Hope putting a new one on the wrong side works ok and doesn't mess any thing up. My hatch laminate is so bad I wish I could fix that also. Thanks
