Knock Sensor Replacement
#1

The CEL is constantly on, and I'm getting a 1-1-3-1 code (knock sensor 1). I've done a search on the forum, but no info is here on the board on how to replace it, and the links to the manuals are down. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Also, since I have 137,500 on the odometer, does it make sense to replace both sensors? One last thing, is the triggering of the knock sensor indicative of something else going on?

Replacing the knock sensor is a piece of cake. Loosen the bolt that holds it to the block and unplug the connector. If one of your knock sensors is setting a code, it could be that the sensor is bad or that there is some detonation in the cylinder next to it. My advice would be to take a look at the spark plugs and see if there is any evidence of detonation or preignition going on. As for changing the other sensor, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Hope everything works out.

I also was always getting that same code - every time I drove past about 4200 rpm or so. Repaced a lot of stuff, including the knock sensors (both), all necessary (I think), and then discovered that my car had an aftermarket chip that just didn't seem to get along with everthing. Jay Kravitz on this forum sold me an original chip and I have not had a problem since. You might also want to check the plug and coil wires - I was getting a bit of discharge from the wires into the engine that I doubt was helping any.

Well, I am getting the knock sensor fault. I bought a new sensor and I can see it bolted to the block under the intake manifold between the runners, but I can not get anything to get onto the bolt to remove it!

I removed the top "PORSCHE" cover to try and get more room for the wrench but it does not solve the problem.

I just bought a deep offset box wrench and I can get it on the bolt but can not get any room to turn the wrench as it bangs into the intake manifold. Adjustable head ratchets do not have enough offset to get down onto the bolt.

This seems so easy when you look at it, but I am stuck. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Has anyone done this R&R that can clue me in?

Thanks

Brian,

I think you are looking at the wrong hall sensor. The sensor that sets the error codes is mounted on the back of the cam gear cover, by the heater control valve. The rear hall sensor is mounted by the flywheel, this is probably the one you are looking at changing. I believe when the rear sensor fails the engine will not run. That's what happened on our 1984 944 when the sensor failed.

The knock sensor #2 is the one that was bad. It turned out that there was corrosion on the sensor connector that caused the computer to give me a bad sensor reading and then a bad cable reading. Replaced the sensor and the connector and all is well. Takes a universal joint to get in there without removing the intake manifold.
