Knock sensor numbers
#1

Are the knock sensors 1 and 2 numbered front to back or vice versa? Can they be replaced without taking parts of the car?

I really wanted to go to Hershey but it didn't work out. My car was in the shop every day last week - 4 separate times - to replace every engine seal to try to control leaks. I still need to get the one on the oil dipstick holder. Then the A/C failed as there was no fluid - I converted it last October to R134a. Today, the variocam code came up again as well as a knock sensor code. An the goofy thing is that, other than the minor oil leak and lack of A/C this car has never worked better or had more power. Got to get all this stuff fixed. Back in again on Thursday.

Kim,

I believe that #1 is the one nearest the radiator.
They can be replaced without removal of the intake manifold with a 1/4" socket set. Use the universal joint/socket combo to get into the valley.
The sensors use very little torque to attach (7 ft/lb). My torque wrench did not go down low enough, had to have PM do it.
Check the connectors for corrosion and brittle plastic.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the knock sensors, along with an estimate as to how much they cost? A few knowledgeable people have recommended replacing them as part of an engine rebuild, which I'm in the middle of. Thanks.

Edit: Before I pull the trigger on this, what's the feeling as to whether replacing the knock sensors as part of a rebuild is necessary/a good idea? I've never gotten a code, nor heard a knock. Now the temperature sensors, that's a different story. My car has given strange coolant temperature readings over the years, so I'm planning to replace the temp sensors to cover all my bases. Just wondering if knock sensors fall into the same category.
