Battery Reset?
#1

I hazard to start anything new along these lines but also didn't want this buried...

So with my continuing *&#^ electrical things going on...today I was going to clean grounds, check the voltage regulator, and pull out the wiring for the "miami vice" style phone. First off to an auto parts place to pick up a couple of items, go to start up and very low volt reading (dash at just barely above the red line) - turn the key and click...then turned over slower than nomal, stated. Voltage (dash) at 11.9.

Oh no...here we go again...

Okay - at least I'm home (this time) and can walk to an auto parts place. Decide to check a few things - battery at 12.5 (car off). Voltage regulator - didn't pull it but should have come with the 2 week old alternator and looks that new from the outside. Grounds seem to check out good, PM had checked grounds with the last alternator too. Tried to pull the phone wires out but in the end got stuck once I traced them to under the dash (black found grounded, green into the bundle running to the ignition, red running up into who knows where).

Okay - ^%#^% - again.

Put everything back together that I had taken apart in tracking the wires.

Reconnect the battery - decide to start her up again, dash voltage now up to 11.9 key over, starts right up with voltage to 13 (13.5 at the battery).

Kinda like it should be.

I succeeding in accomplishing nothing while the battery was disconnected - the only thing that had changed was having it disconnected for a couple of hours. Does disconnecting the battery reset anything?

Yes, disconnecting the battery for a while acts like a "cold boot" to a computer and resets everything. It also erases all of your radio station programming and that has to be manually reprogrammed as well as manually resetting the clock. Clean all of the ground wires you can find, these cars are notorious for having poor ground connections which can cause all kinds of electrical problems. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

The mysterious "reset" was probably just a loose connection at the battery. Re-installing it firmed thins up again. Corroded or loose battery terminals is the first item on the list to check when investigating poor charging, but most of us (me too) forget to cover this basic item.

What's kind of interesting is that my radio presets have stayed in place. This through (now) multiple battery disconnects. Maybe some of this goes back to my stereo weirdness?

Also my electrical has stayed problematic (same type of symptoms) through a couple of alternators, this battery is two weeks old....hmmmm......

Hell..I dunno - and am at a loss. Should probably at this point just get very (or at least much more) systematic about everything...

Thanks for the help!
