About 30 min ago I removed all the "non-essentials" from the trunk and left in only the car cover, my emergency soccer gear ( in case I drive by a pick-up game in progress and they need another dude ), one can of fix-a-flat , a pair of pliers, one crescent wrench, a two head screwdriver, a roll of electrical tape, and the OE lug nut "wrench". I measured the rear ride height ( twice) prior to removing all the the junk to make sure I have an accurate reading of the before and after, and measured it again, twice, afterwards. This is at the center of the rear wheel from ground to the center of the fender arch. The difference : 3/8" And I have 90 lbs springs back there. Someone can do the math an figure out how much weight had to be there to lower the ride over the wheels by 3/8" , but I was surprised it made that big of a difference.

Probably just gained the equivalent of another 10 HP !!

lol - quick math says 85 lbs give or take if both springs moved a full 3/8" - pretty sure it wasn't that much weight though, but probably at least half of it

you sure it wasn't 3/16"? you were danged near sitting dead even, and on the phone you said now the rear is 1/8" high

as long as we are being geeky, again via quick math, the effective hp gain of an 85lb loss is about 7

it was 3/8. i think what i said ( or maybe meant to say ) on the phone is that i want the rear 1/8 higher than the front, ideally..
yeah, i don't think it was 85 lbs, but at least half of that ... without a doubt !

well, since it was nearly level with you in the car (about 1/8" high when you weren't), are you saying it's now 3/8" high in the rear? with you in the car or out?

with me out of the car of course, my arms are not long enough to measure all four corners while sitting in the cabin so i guess 1/4" higher than before in that case.

Would the spare even be safe to use? In addition to being 20 years old, the sidewalls are folded in storage. I think that would make the integrity of the tire even more suspect. I was just debating taking mine out.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned the cylinder in the right wheel well of cabs. What is that for?

Flash has said that it's a ballast weight added to even out the weight distribution or dampen some harmonics (kinda like the little weights added to the strut mounts) or something like that. I have a coupe (junk in trunk removed, stereo stuff added) so don't take my word for it!

pretty much

i have spoken to the guys who actually added it, and was told how and why it happened. it wasn't any kid of scientific thing. it was as a result of some executives on a test drive feeling that the car was a bit twitchy, due to chassis flex and imbalance. so, ACS, who was charged with converting the cars to cabs, took an old design from another american car, and put it in this one. the idea was to change the frequency of the oscillations of the chassis and to balance the car out. again, no real engineering went into this, which is evident from the implementation.

it is extremely similar to the plate in the right rear of the E30 convertible and in the front of early 911s

many of us have removed it long ago, with no deleterious effects, particularly if you have all the of D1R braces in the car.

peter morgan said that one day somebody is going to find a big hole in the ground filled with these things. he also told me that he secretly suspected that it was the nazi's way of getting the gold out of germany, so maybe you should drill into it and see what's in there before tossing it. lol

I think my car's about to lose some weight. Now if only I could. Short of diet and exercise, I've tried everything. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I recall (for Cabs), that moving the battery to the back to replace that dead weight works well.

In my coupe, I removed spare etc. and also replaced the rear muffler to save weight in the back. I do have a Tip so I want to

put the battery back there to balance out the Subs and amps.

lol - i can make it up, as i already have the drawings and parts list. i have repeatedly offered to do it, but i need more than 1 person to want it to justify making a run. higher connections was going to carry it, but that never happened.

i might be able to slip it in though when i do the sheet metal for the supercharger kits

I had a 66 911 that I was removing the front bumper on. I had my legs under the front and when it let loose I thought I would loose those legs. Boy was I surprised. Cast iron weights as far forward as they could get them. I knew nothing about this at the time.
