Introduction, sort of
#1

I've been here a few times before asking a question or two about my father's 1992 968 over the past couple years. This weekend, I will be selling my 1974 MGB back to my uncle (he was the original owner) and then purchasing my father's 968. I've enjoyed the advice I've received thus far and am excited to dive into Porsche ownership (this is my first). So, some quick details of the car:
1992 Coupe
Grand Prix White
Navy leather
16" alloys (in need of tires soon)
32,000 miles, but up to date on service based on age. All belts changed 1 year ago and fresh seals, etc thanks to advice here
Tiptronic (big bummer, but what can I do?)

So hopefully I'll return Sunday with a 968. My dd currently is a 2008 Audi A4 quattro 2.0T 6spd manual so at least I get my shifts there.

Greetings!

Chris

Flash might know more -- okay he DEFINITELY knows more -- but I don't think a transmission swap is possible. If it is it would be quite a bit of moulah. Either way, you have quite a low-mile, garage queen that has been well-maintained. She should prove to be easy to maintain for years to come. Good luck!

Hi Chris,

I remember seeing your posts. When you get into the swing of 968 ownership do some reading and post some questions. Lots to see and do here.

You should update your profile with Location info etc. so others in your area will know you are around.

Regards,

Jay

Very cool that you have a one family MGB.
And very cool to pick up a low mileage 968 from dad.

Welcome to the fold.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

A 6 speed swap is very possible but not cheap.

swap is indeed very expensive - essentially everything rear of the engine must change - even the electronics are not the same - motor mounts are different too - additional cooling system and plumbing for it required

i priced it out and was looking about about $9k to have a shop do it - you could possibly do it yourself for about half of that if you sourced out the used parts

Welcome. Nice to have another in the Atlanta fold. Been trying to make up there for events. Maybe we'll meet up someday! Enjoy!

Thanks for the quick replies! I've updated my city/state info, thanks for pointing that out.
I forget sometimes that sarcasm doesn't come across well in posts...I don't intend on swapping the slushbox to a manual as it's quite expensive and I'd rather spend that cash on the car elsewhere. I've got some catching up to do, that's for sure. You'll see me around.

and where does one get this mysterious "paddle shift" upgrade? And while at it how about a another gear or two. That would be nice

Welcome Chris, great opportunity on the low mileage 968. I also have a Tip and would rather have a Tip 968 than well.....a lot of other cars out there.

it comes standard with the ejections seat / smoke screen package - those controls are all tied in with the onboard voice-controlled GPS computer linked to NORAD

This post is starting to go down the same road as a previous post "top ten things to do to a 968"

it was just wrong. LOL

Welcome and enjoy your new car!

Surely this must be possible. You can buy a 996 wheel with the shift buttons, and all that remains is to connect it to the same place the tip goes? I have often wondered whether it would be possible to put a new tip gearbox with 7 gears into the older cars. These thoughts have not been aimed so much at the 968, but more towards a 928 with an auto box, I have always fantasized about buying an old S4 and converting it to a tip.

So many dreams, so little time...
