A Rookie: New Introduction
#1

Hi everyone, my name is Chuck, and I live in Burlingame (San Francisco), California.

I do not yet have a 968, but am on the hunt to get one now.  Thought I'd get educated first, and learn a few things from this terrific community of folks who actually HAVE one!

My first car was a 1968 Camaro (V8 327, 2-speed powerglide trans).    Did all my own work on that small block, and great times in the garage with my Dad.

My uncle had a 944 when I was in high school.   Not to state the obvious, but that 944 was just an amazing experience, and I'm finally in a financial position to get one (at age 51, no less -- no time like the present).   My Dad owned a red 911 for a period of time, and we loved roaring up and down the coast in that.    But my heart has always been on the design of the 944/968 -- and thus begins my new journey!

Hoping you folks might steer me in the right direction.   I've already been reading the DO's and DON'Ts.   Thanks to any and all who might point me in the right direction in buying a 968.

Hi Chuck,

Maybe you can tell from my profile thumbnail/photo...but, i know where Burlingame is.

Welcome & thanks for sharing the memories you had of your dad...i too have great memories (and some not-so-great - - he did have an obsession with British ones that i do not share with him) of working with my dad on cars.

My first car was a Pontiac Tempest with the 326 and two-speed transmission (I like to think of it as a GTO with a small block)...

Best wishes for finding the right 968.  Be patient, there aren't that many left...especially, if you want a really good one.  I also recommend driving it - - up & down PCH sounds like a good plan.

You're in California, not PA, get a Cabriolet. Welcome to the forum. There are some 968 owners in the Bay Area. I am up in Marin County. Please come visit and talk before you buy one. I have tons of info I can pass on to you.

Cab or Coupe, doesn't really matter; each has its advantages and disadvantages. I specifically wanted a Cab, so that's what I looked for, but I still find the driving experience of the Coupe appealing. The difference in noise and rigidity is very obvious, and the silhouettes of the models are very different. It's just what works for you and what appeals to your eye and your budget.

My advice is to look at many, drive a few, and especially drive the cars owned by some of the members on here. There is a world of difference between a poorly cared for model and one that has been well maintained. You won't realize that until you drive a nice one that you can use for comparison to the others. The first one I drove almost made me rethink buying a 968. There is just so much variability between the worst example and the best example of these cars.
