Introduction
#1

Hello my name is Wes and I am researching the 968 as a potential autocross platform for the Stock and possibly Street Tire classes of SCCA autocross. I currently have a Miata and while I really enjoy it, I'd like to get something a bit faster and more capable.

The long term goal is to stay away from prepared classes and keep the car somewhat streatable, but we'll see how the research goes. I apologize in advance for inane questions regarding camber and limited slip differentials.

welcome to the site.

i think you'll find the miata is quicker and more fun in autocross. it's size and weight make it a pretty clear winner there. however, the 968 will be a LOT more fun on the street and on the track. they are really apples and oranges. the miata is a sports car. the 968 is a GT. they both do their jobs very nicely, but they are very different cars, each with its own set of advantages.

as for the questions, do some reading here before asking those. you'll quickly find that most of what you want to know has already been asked and answered. the site is lain out in encyclopedic fashion, so poke around, enjoy yourself, and discover the 968

again, welcome

Flash is right about speed and weight, but don't forget fun and the efficiencies a GT brings. 2 sets of golf clubs, couple of cases of wine, clothes for the weekend and oops let's not forget Ayn!! Sorry couldnt resist!

Welcome Wes! I have autocrossed both my '92 Miata and '93 968. Both have stock LSD units that I would recommend highly for autocross or track use. They are different for sure, but it would really depend on the course which would be quicker. The 968 can be quite good. I once took fast time of day for stock classes in my 968 - in the wet. I have also driven both my cars on the track and raced a 968 and miata, again both have their charms and weaknesses. However, for overall satisfaction, the 968 is clearly my favorite.

If you like changing wheels, you can carry a second set of tires inside a coupe 968. I have 225/245 Toyo RA-1s on stock 16" rims that fit in the back with the rear seats folded. The is also room for a small jack, tool box, etc. in the back leaving the front seat open for helmet, lunch, etc.

Cheers, Stephen
