Intro and question
#1

Greetings, all!

I've been lurking for a while now, and decided to introduce myself since I'm going to be picking up my newly purchased '92 Guards Red Coupe on Sunday. I previously had an '84 944 which I absolutely loved. (And we're talking about as basic as 944's go, here, too) But, I had to sell it and get by on much lesser (although newer) cars for my last couple years of college. Now that I've got a full time job and have been saving my pennies for a while, it's time to get back in a real car! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

My question is this... I've seen 0-60 mph numbers ranging from 5.9s - 6.5s, which is a pretty substantial range. What do you think, is the number somewhere in the middle or what?

Jon...

First Welcome aboard you are going to have a blast with your new 968. Nice choice in color too.. This forum can be your best friend when it comes to the 968.

Second you sure do look like Eric Rustech... you two could be brothers!

Third... To answer your question. I think you could be confusing Coupe and Tip Tronic numbers as they are different.

Welcome,

Coming from a 944 you will really enjoy the 968. I'll be the first to request posting pictures when you get to it. IMO the 0-60 is not the cars best asset, it is quick don't get me wrong. It's the twisties that make this car a blast.

Welcome and enjoy!

well, let's put it this way - before my last set of power upgrades, the WORST time i clocked 0-60 i my 6 sp cab on a day i ran a few test runs was 5.65

a stock hardtop 6 sp model should turn around 6 flat if you get the launch right and make the shift

i'll be doing a new set of runs in the very near future, and expect much better times

that being said, josho is right - the twisties are where this car shines - i regularly trounce 996s in the canyons

Welcome and salutations.

The 0-60 time is also highly dependent on how you drive the car too. Magazines typically have a policy that they don't power shift for gear changes. Drivers also have differing techniques that can make significant variations. We are only talking about tenths of seconds and the human factor plays a huge part.

Flash's technique is akin to Chuck Connors opening sequence in "The Rifleman" As fast as you can pull the trigger without lifting the throttle. Good for time, hard on the equipment.

very true dave - i've always been hard on boxes and difs - makes for a really nice scratch though - oh yeah - back to hard on stuff (like tires)

i was really amazed at how tough it was to get a good launch - i could easily lose a full half second in wheelspin - there was a very fine line between bog and spin - the aluminum flywheel is a large part of that - it can make for low times and faster acceleration if you nail everything just right - it can cost you if you don't

i don't recommend doing a lot of that kind of thing - these cars are not built for stoplight racing - the rear suspension is poorly designed for that - besides, any small block vega (crackerbox nova, small block pinto - enter your own budget dragster of choice here) will cream you by a long shot - so will a bone stock suburu

stick to what this car is best at - corners
