620HP 911. Fastest most powerfull ever.

Here is the press release.
Porsche 911 GT2 RS – Most Powerful, Street Legal Porsche Ever
Ultimate 911 extracts 620 ultra-efficient, twin-turbocharged horsepower from 3.6 liters; dramatically improved power-to-weight ratio and increased fuel economy

ATLANTA - May 12, 2010 - The time: seven minutes, 18 seconds on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The power: 620 hp. The weight: 3,020 lb (1,370 kilograms) in road trim with all fluids on board. The car: the new 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

90 More Horsepower, 154 lbs Less Filling
The latest 911 is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche. With horsepower (hp) up by 90 and weight down by 154 lbs (70 kilograms) in comparison with the previous 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a power-to-weight ratio of just 4.9 lbs (2.21 kg) per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class. These are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility and truly blistering performance on the road. Perfectly illustrating Porsche Intelligent Performance, the 2011 GT2 RS achieves a reduction of approximately 5 percent for both fuel consumption and CO2 emission reduction when compared with the previous 911 GT2.

The 3.6 liter six-cylinder boxer engine features two variable turbine geometry turbochargers and provides power to the rear wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual gearbox. Equally impressive stopping power comes from Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes (PCCB).

Unique Tires, One of a Kind Performance
New tires were specifically developed for the 911 GT2 RS and measure 245/35 ZR 19 at the front and 325/30 ZR 19 at the rear, delivering cornering performance to match the straight-line speed. Extreme cornering dynamics are ensured by the setup of the springs, Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM), unique anti-roll bars, specific engine mounts and recalibrated Porsche Stability Management (PSM), whose stability and traction control functions can be switched off individually.

The combined effect of these developments is evident on the racetrack. In fact, the ultimate 911 accelerates from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, boasts a top-track speed of 205 mph and laps the famed Nürburgring-Nordschleife racetrack in just 7 minutes and 18 seconds.

Carbon Fiber, Limited Production
In its looks, the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the other 911 models through the lavish use of carbon-fiber-reinforced (CFR) components with a matt-black surface finish, even wider wheels (including flared wheel arches at the front), new light-alloy wheels with central locking and "GT2 RS" model designations on the doors and rear lid. Matte-finish carbon also graces the redesigned front spoiler lip and the 3/8th of an inch (10 mm) taller rear spoiler lip - which both enhance aerodynamics and provide extra downforce.

The interior of the 911 GT2 RS also exudes sporting performance in virtually every detail. Lightweight two-piece bucket seats made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic are standard, as are lightweight door panels with fabric straps instead of traditional door handles. The basic interior color is black, which contrasts with red elements, such as the seat center sections, the roof lining and segments of the steering wheel rim. The gearshift and handbrake lever are also finished in red alcantara.

Limited to just 500 units worldwide, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in the U.S. October 2010 and will have a MSRP of $245.000. The GT2 RS is making its world debut at the Moscow Auto Show on August 25th 2010.

Wow. Nice commercial too !
But, I'm guessing maybe 1% of the those who will be able to afford this car will have the skill to handle that kind of power, the remaining 99% will likely wrap it around a telephone pole within ten minutes of driving it out of the dealer lot. Call me a cynic, but after seeing ( news reports ) Veyrons, Enzos, Reventons, etc totaled within days or maybe a couple of weeks of purchase can't help but think that way. Alongside the envy, of course..

Now thats a drivers car.
Although going paddles and leaving it to the computers minimizes shift times, it also dilutes driving experience. After all your not always in a race.

Maybe Porsche will force people to "qualify" for purchase (Like the 959)...it might put them in the hands of owners who can handle them...just don't loan it to Eddie Griffin!!!

maybe the government should start mandating the purchase of certain vehicles and have special license/racing experiance requirements in order to purchase cars like these. The GT2 (starting with the 993) has been dubbed the "Widow Maker" and for good reason. These cars are a handfull and then some.

For Comparo.

1997 Porsche 996 GT1 Street Version {1.5DM(approx $822,300) New} Thats $1,115,002.94 in todays dollars.
2,756LBS/544BHP 5.07LBS/HP

2004 Porsche Carrera GT ($440,000 New) Thats $506,922.39 in todays dollars
3,042LBS/612BHP 4.97LBS/HP

2010 Porsche 997 GT2 RS ($245,000 New)
3,020LBS/620HP 4.87LBS/HP

Don't know what the nurburgring time for the 996 GT1 is, but the 997 GT2 RS is quicker then the Carrera GT around the Ring (And by a good margin). 7:18 vs 7:28

I recently drove a new Caymen S with the 7 speed twin clutch transmission. I can't say that it diluted the driving experience all that much. What it do was a really nice job of diluting the ache in my left knee that I frequently experience with the 968. I think it was either you of Flash who commented on my rather pronounced limp after our drive down to Paso.

Well I guess there's something to be said for that.

But for the time being, I love the experience of having Both feet and both hands in motion as I take a spirited drive down a twisty wooded road. I'm sure I would also enjoy it in an automatic but my left leg and foot would be so bored.

I'm with you Rhude, I love the act of shifting. For me, specially downshifting into a curve...

Maybe, but not in the 968. That was the reason for the Miata, but it never happened, so I suppose that I will have to remain "unsafe at any speed" on the open road...

Thats what happens when you push 620hp in a rear engine beetle. They are not very forgiving cars. Tail happy, and 620hp is definitely a handful. Im amazed they one upped the CGT, with a rear engine car. Even Porsche usually goes mid engine in its super cars.

The older I get, the less thrilled I become with uber-power, utterly unobtainable (by anyone other than Wall Street banksters) "supercars." I'm much more impressed with seeing guys buy older 911's or 944's for well under 10K, perform some well-executed upgrades, and turn them into cars that will run with the best of the mega-buck new cars on the track. 600+ hp for a quarter of a million bucks? Yawn.

Well considering this car is way cheaper then the CGT which was way cheaper then the 996 GT1, its pretty impressive. More for less.....maybe in another 5 years we'll get a 100K 600+ HP car from Porsche. wishfull thinking.
