Impressed
#1

This week my wife and I had planned to visit some friends in the south of Germany (Munich) and decided not to fly over there but take the 968 and make it a few day trip. Drove from the Netherlands through the German Eifel area to Luxembourg (day 1), Stuttgart (day 2) and into Munich (day 3). In the Eifel had lots of fun driving the sweeping roads going through many hairpin turns up and down the mountains. Did some autobahn high speed runs into Stuttgart. Visited the new Porsche museum (already did the factory tour and old museum few years back). Arrived in Munich on Friday afternoon and parked the 968 in a parking garage until we drove back today. Covered about 2000Km in 5 days of which 850 today in just under 8 hours. What really impressed me is the fact that this almost 20 year old car can still keep up with most cars on the road both in the twisty Eifel as well as on the autobahn. Comfortably cruising at speeds between 150-180 km/h and on a few occasions the car (fully loaded with two people, luggage for 5 days including a golf bag) still managed to reach its manufacturer claimed top speed of just over 250km/h on the gps. Left Munich at 8 in the morning so had some almost empty 3 lane autobahn to ourselves. All I can say is wow!

Wish the Bereauidiots over here in the USA would realize that there are some folks that could really appreciate being able to travel in style at speed, but no we have to dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator!!! Idiots!!!

So jealous Jaap. I have been waiting for the opportunity to take the 968 to the Eiffel for years now but have not managed. Did take it to Frankfurt earlier this year and was impressed like you with its composure on the autobahn and the ease with which it accelerated to 260. Will take the gps next time and hope for less traffic to see what it can really do. Hopefully some more quiet twisty roads as well next time, something we are sorely missing in Holland. Thanks for the nice impression of a great trip.

I think the Netherlands is much like the US when it comes to maximum speed and other traffic related issues. All highways are restricted some even to 100 or even 90 km/h. Fortunately Germany is not that far.

I have visited the Eifel a number of times. Started with motorcycle trips from which I still use the roadmaps linking all these nice roads together. Although the autobahn is fun I prefer those mountain back roads. My speedometer on the 968 used to be very optimistic (almost 10%) but since I have adjusted the internal resistor it is accurate within a few km/h. So indicated speed on gps and speedometer was almost the same.

Thanks for posting your experience! It is a good motivator for the rest of us to "get out and enjoy" our 968 on more than just a quick drive...

When I was in Germany earlier this year, driving in the Black Forest area (Baden Baden), I used my GPS to find the smaller. less travelled and twisty roads. I wished over and over that I was driving the 968...

Does anyone have an idea what it costs to ship a car to Europe (and back)? I have a "crazy dream"; to celebrate the 25th year of my car (that would be 2018!) by taking it to Europe and driving it on a long "European adventure"! It would probably be far cheaper to buy one there, drive it around, then sell it again. But... it would not be "my" 968.

I can always dream... it costs nothing!

Speaking of longer trips, I am planning on going to the PCA PARADE 2012 in Salt Lake City...
