I've noticed that sometimes Tire Rack shows two listings for the same tire, but at different prices.



Is this because the cheaper of the two has been sitting in a warehouse for a year or two while the more expensive one is the 'fresh produce'?



I never knew that tires got 'old' until I bought my 968, which had front tires dated 2005. I spent a lot of time and money trying to fix steering/handling problems that were most likely caused by the old tires, though they looked fine and had plenty of tread. Now that they're gone I can tell they were HORRIBLE - they basically killed the steering and handling of the car!



Lesson learned: Get the newest tires you can and replace them before they're, what, five years old?

This question just came up in my 'Car Talk' desk calendar. Click & Clack recommend a max life of six years. If you do a lot of "spirited" driving, you might want to cut that to about five years.

i had a noticeable change in compliance of the SO-3s i had on the car at 6 years. i had never gone that far before, but didn't have any miles on them, and they were kept warm and dry, so i didn't really think about it.



typically i change tires at 4 years, due to an increase in harshness of ride. this is partly due to rubber hardening, and partly due to thinning of the tread as it wears, which inherently reacts differently to impact and absorbs less of it



typically i change them when they get within .050" of the wear nearest wear bar to the tread surface, or at 4 years, whichever comes first.

IMHO, they might not necessarily be the best in every single category ( though even in that respect they manage to always stay in the top two or there )

If they never win but stay in the top two or three, we should call them "Greg Normans". <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />
