Newbie with a low milage cab. Didn't even know the exhaust tip is chrome. Mine looks like it has an anodized black finish. What is the best method/product for cleaning this thing?

it's stainless, but polished (or black depending on year)



i use a fine steel wool to clean, and then a polishing compound and a rag to polish (or buffer if it's really bad)

I paid a metal polisher to have my done. It looks fabulous. The best $40 I ever spent and the best afternoon I did not spend polishing it myself.

If it is black anodize, I have been using muriatic acid to clean the anodized centers on my wheels with great success.

I did small patches and neutralized the acid with baking soda and water.

BE CAREFUL OF THE FUMES AND DO NOT LET IT GET ON YOUR SKIN!

Not sure when they changed from black to polished (my 93 is black) but a good cleaning with normal car soap should remove any soot, at least well enough to decide if it should be black or bright.

Ron, I guess I owe you $40! After about an hour of polishing at Flash' house in April, my exhaust tip looked amazing. Ask Ron (midblu) how hard it is. He labored but seemed to achieve the desired result without much of a problem.

I have a chrome tip I'm willing to sell cheap plus postage. I upgraded to the RSBarn exhaust and kept the tip before I threw away the old exhaust. I polished it best I could with steelwool and polishing liquid.

My 93 tip is black, and going to stay that way.



I have chrome on my other car and its become just too much trouble to clean so it stays black too.

I'm revisiting this old topic because I pulled my tail pipe off today to clean it. It was black, but had some metal showing through. I took steel wool to it thinking it was supposed to be stainless, but after scrubbing it for a while, I believe it was originally black. Honestly, it was kinida hard to tell. Does anybody know what was stock on a 94 coupe? Was it supposed to be a stainless tip or was it black? I suppose I take to the powder coater or get it chromed. A new one is 180 bucks. Yikes!

Mine was stainless. God knows what the PO has done to it.
It will polish up like chrome with a polish. A rewarding way to pass some time.

'94 is black and under the paint I believe you have mild steel.

on my 93 Coupe mine was finished in a black paint which looked "original" but underneath was shiny stainless steel - looks much better now!

almost positive they are all stainless, but some are black coated - some are straight - some are rolled edge - i'm working on laying out which year came with what in a chart that shows the year by year changes

Bump - so a 94.5 tip is straight edge, not rolled ? If they're easy to remove ( just bolts ? ) I'll probably replace it with a rolled edge tip one from the earlier cars. I presume based on what I'm reading here those come polished, otherwise if the stock ones are all black, I'll have to have it powder coated, or painted . Or maybe I'll just have the original one painted in a chrome or satin silver finish, thinking the high temperature engine paints should be perfectly fine for the exhaust also ...??
