Hi to all of you!

I am a new member living in Corning, NY.

I don't have a 968 yet, but I test drove my second one today. The first one was a white Coupe that was sold locally. I colleague of mine who used to own a 951 pointed it out to me and made me test drive the car. Ususally, cars don't do much for me (they are there to get from A to B, right) but the 968 struck a cord with me.

So I decided to make an offer for this car (after 1 week), only to find out that it sold already! To add insult to injury, I learned that it "sold to a 79 year old lady who used to own one years ago and regetted selling it ...." Oh well.

So I looked around and found another one (red coupe, my prefered version) in Buffalo, NY. To make a long story short - they wanted 15k for a car w/ service records, a cracked windshield, dead battery, slight damage from hitting the curb with the frame,..... and more.

Well, I am still looking now, hopefully one will come around soon. Can't wait!

Welcome Klaus!

I grew up in the Binghamton area, but have since moved (far) away. Nice to see someone from (near) the ol'hometown here. If you're willing to drive some, I'm sure there are 968s out there that are better deals than that! IIRC there was a near perfect cab available in Fairfield, CT. Maybe not your ideal, but could be a nice summer car.

Welcome, imagine getting skunked by a senior citizen. Truth be told there was probably a reason for that! Perhaps you will find an even better 968! Lol enjoy the search because you will most definitely live for the days you can drive it. Check out Tama he is up your way.

Klaus,

We were just at the Corning glass museum over the summer. Nice place and a nice town. Good luck with the search.

Welcome to the forums I'm in the Albany area (Saratoga Springs).

Definitely look at a few and don't get discouraged by the "rats" with worn interiors and high mileage that their disco-Dan owners think are worth $20K because they just put a new Kraco stereo in it.

Hold out for the car that has been owned by a few respectful people who maintain it and want to see it go to a good home, at a reasonable price.

Keep looking. For $15K you can get a pretty nice coupe these days.

Thanks for all the encouraging words!

And yes, the "elderly lady snatch" was a bitter one - it was a nice, white coupe with 45k for $12,000. But is was the first 968 I saw, and so I hesitated ... oh well. There will be another one, I am sure. And I prefer red anyways ...

I"ll keep looking, unfortunately I suspect that Winter and Spring may be a bad time since people sell them off before Winter, and then start driving them in Spring. We'll see. I guess persistance is the key.

Thanks for the tip! That one sure looks interesting. A little far to drive for a casual look - about 6 1/2hs - but I will call tomorrow to find ouy about maintnance records and such.

So how do I actually find out the options from the VIN? And would you guys recommends a PPI even if the car has all the record available?

If it is doable for you a PPI is a good idea. Somewhere on this site, flash chime in here, is a download for one!

Thanks for the link - I saw the documents already, and I guess the trick is to find a mechanic in the area that is knowledgable and can do the PPI. We will see. I need to call first, and I didn't have the time to do that today.

Also, there is a 968 that popped up on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-Pors...27c16adc0d

that looks interesting. Both are within driving distance 5-7hs, which is good. I wish they were red though, but I guess I could be OK with black as well. I let you guys know what turn out with either of these cars.

And thanks again for the advice and for pointing out the car on craigslist!

This is a black coupe. It is a option code 718 968 which means it was originally a 93 and reVINed to a 94 so it has the older 944 style seats. Options include partial leather in black/cashmere, XD4 painted crest center caps, and 220 limited slip! It is #1347 of 2,234.

I made a few drives of 3 hours or more (each way) with a trailer in tow to look at some rats, then finally flew down to VA (from upstate NY) to visit with Darryl and see three or four nice examples, and to drive mine back.

It might sound like a bit much, but it was worth it.

I'm originally from near Syracuse and love the Corning area and esp anywhere in the Finger Lakes... my latest 968 came from PA, via Geneva, NY, and is a "MINTER" as the Brits say! Glad to have you coming aboard... these are cars that once you drive a nice one, you can't go back to the every day grocery getters...

There was a super nice red Coupe on eBay recently, with low miles.... 20K or thereabouts... but it was a Tip, and that may not fit your bill... of course, there can be a lot of advantages to having a Tip (automatic trans), so not knocking them... I think the seller wanted about $18K for this one, and he had already added rather huge and flashy (no pun intended, folks!) wheels... 19's or 20's... which really don't work all that well unless you are a poser and just want to cruise below 50 mph...

Run some searches on the various used auto sales web sites, and even Craigs list, and see what pops up... not a lot of 968's but the nice ones are still out there... I nearly bought a red coupe with 60K + miles on it before I lucked into mine. Strangely, I find that a lot of non Porsche type folks own or owned 968's, and don't really talk to us enthusiasts about them, and they sell their cars thru rather unlikely places... trade them in for Buicks or Hondas and such! Go figure!

Try the Cars for sale site at Pelican on the Web, and maybe evven RL or Paragon sites... I think they have for sale pages as well....

Just checked... the 93 968 red coupe is still on eBay, with 19K claimed miles, Tiptronic Trans, 18" wheels (oops!) and claims to be mint in and out and justt fully serviced! Wants $17,900.00 I am guessing that during the Xmas season, the seller would let it go for ..... $16,500 cash on the barrel head ... who knows, but the car is really worth at least that IF it is really as claimed. If I had more garage space I would buy it and let the wife chauffer me around in it! So there you go! Its a flat ten hour drive from Corning to Chi Town, but if you want some help with eyes on the ground, PM me and maybe I can help out... I am only 1.5 hours from downtown Chicago.... need to be serious about buying tho... not just kicking tires!
