Help on overheating.
#1

Okay here's the situation. Was up to NJ/PA the 12th to 14th for the Run Rite procedure with Pete (RS Barn). Car ran great, did a fun run with Jay Kravitz and troops on Saturday, no problems. Heading home on Sunday, temp went to the red line on the PA Tpk, pulled over at a call box. I could see the heater hose (coming from the radiator) was leaking. Tow truck came and had the car towed to Lancaster (25 miles away) to AutoHaus Porsche. Got the car back on Wed. Drove to DC with no problems, constantly watched the temp gauge and it was steady at a little over the the 9 o'clock mark. 3 hours later my wife told me there was a puddle under the car. Looked under the hood and the antifreeze was bubbling in the expansion tank and overflowing. Mystified after 3 hours it over heats. Talked to IMA and Chris thought there might be air in the system. So, Tuseday I opened the nut on the main pipe going to the engine and the antifreeze flowing out. Added some water and ran the car. The engine got hot and sure enough started to bubble in the expansion tank. Checked the temp gauage but NO reading. Scheduled to take it to IMA next Monday. or do I have it towed or try and drive it with the A/C so the fans are running? There does not seem to be any hose leaks. Any advice?

Two thoughts come to mind...

First is the water pump...Any leaks coming from that area?

Second is the head gasket; is there any steam/mist coming from tailpipe. Is there any discolored product showing up in your colant?

Are your fans running? If you don't have a resoultion by Friday, give me a call here in me office and I'll see if we can tackle it then. I'll put a call in to my guy who is off on Fridays to see if he can lend a hand.

air in the system could be from a blown head gasket, pushing combustion into the system. I had the same issue. My head actually had a small "tunel" from the water jacket to the cylinder. I was always getting air into the system and pushing it out the overflow.

I ran the car for about 10-15minutes until it got hot. No leaks I could see then the fluid level started to rise in the overflow tank. The service mgr at Auohaus thought there was an oil leak coming from the head gasket. I saw no oil drips. It was supposedly coming from the right rear of the engine. So, I guess it might be the head gasket. While I had the car running the fans did not come on. When I ran the A/C they came on. I was thinking I could drive it to IMA with the A/C on. It is about a 20-25 mile drive. Didn't notice any steam coming from the exhaust but I was not looking. It is going to IMA next Monday so I can certainly wait but I would like to avoid another tow.
