Help! Carpet
#1

Does anyone know of a shop that sells 968 carpet. Autos Intl told my they had a kit for a Cabrio complete for about $550. I ordered, pulled out my carpet, and then they called and said sorry they don't have a 968. I tried everyone I can think of and searched the forum with no luck. All I really need is the cabin floor so even a partial Coupe kit would work. After I dealt with that amazing "Return of the Blob" glue mess I'll be grateful for any help/suggestions.

Thanks

Jim

Thanks Brian,

World Uph told me they didn't have 968 carpet sets. I used to own a 944 S2 Cab and it seems the same except for the storage box vice rear seats; so I'll try that kit from World. Have you (or anyone else) used a 944 carpet set? I was hoping for some confirmation before I ordered. I'm still suffering from PTSD from glue removal. I think the plant manager's brother owned a glue factory in Stuttgart.

Cheers

Sorry, have not replaced carpet. Try to send a PM to Flash, he may have replaced carpet in his 968.

I talked to Bob at 928leathershop - great guy- he also has 944 but not 968 sets and didn't know if it would fit. He's got the best price by the way. He offered to do it if I sent him my old carpet, so I may go that route. It would be a wasted effort for him if the 944 kit works. Having had an S2 I can think of only two things that are different: the door pockets and the storage box, and I recovered both of those in another material. I'll post what I learn at the end, but I'm still looking for someone who has successfully used the 944 set.

Thanks

Bob's location is about 15 minutes from me. I will give him a call moday. I also want new carpets and seats recovered. Maybe I can bring my car over to him and we can see if the 944 carpets fit(if he has a set) will post results.

Bob told me if I sent him my old carpet he'd give me a deal because he'd be using it as a pattern. You're going over there would solve the riddle of whether the 944 set fits. He does such quality work I'd rather send my stuff to him... that way all us 968 folks would have a great source. I tried hard to preserve the carpet as I removed it, but it was a PITA. I'll hold off until I learn what you find out. I really appreciate your help.

Saw Bob of 928 Leathershop. We spent an hour discussing carpets and leather. Looks like I will be taking out my carpet so that he will have templates. Will get it to him this week. Very helpful and has a lot of great interior bits. I saw a few of his steering wheels and leather and carpet samples. His leather work on 928 steering wheels is really fantasic.

Will keep you informed......

What do you guys think about tan leather, dark red carpet and white exterior? My wife says black or charcoal carpet.....

Trust your wife. I think red carpet would be "too much of a good thing". Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

That's why we have wives. They act as sounding boards for our "Seemed like a good idea at the time" moments. I'm with Bob. Trust your wife and stay away from the red. Besides you don't want the inside of your car looking like a bleeding white-tail deer.

I am still partial to burgandy carpet. If any other color, I would go with original.

Taking out the old carpet is the biggest PITA. GLUED in many places with an indestructable ever stick glue. Even the rear seat was glued in along front margin. After carefully removing many little clips and screws and working slowly, it comes out intact and without breaking anything.

I am thinking of eliminating the door pockets (but keeping th speakers and speaker covers. Makes getting in and out easier.

I am not actually going to cut the old pockets, but rather make some new fiberglass carpeted covers as the original pocket screws holes are all jacked up from being kicked a thousand times...

Also time for new speakers as the original center cover glue failed and covers slid down and have stuck themselves to the neoprene surround.....(maybe these were aftermarket speakers, but they were German origin)

pics show the leather, no too thick or thin, supple but strong, nice grain

also, German velour, dense weave, no backing, cut pile...soft and appears durable (this sample is blue)
