Help in changing a title
#1

Hi

It looks like I'm going to be able to finally buy a 968, depending on the PPI. Being from Canada I'm not exactly clear on how to change the title. To export the car from the U.S., and import to Canada, I need the title with my name on it. Will this be a problem? The car is in San Francisco but is registered in Wisconsin, therefore I will not be able to go through the authorities in California.

Any help would be appreciated.

Actually, I can't help you much. My white coupe is a US car but I bought it in Toronto. My blue cab is a Canadian car bought in Toronto also. I have never bought (and probably won't ever buy) a US car in the US and try to bring it here. Speedo conversions and the like cost too much money. Better to buy a Canadian car here in Canada.

Hi

I'm sorry I guess I didn't make myself clear. I'm not concerned about the process of

importing the 968 into Canada, that's relatively easy and inexpensive. What I'm concerned about is transferring the title of a car I hope to buy in California although it's registered in Wisconsin. We don't use titles in Canada so therefore I'm asking about how this process will work and should I be looking for any potential problems?

Thanks

If I understand your post, the car you want to purchase is physically located in California, but registered in Wisconsin. If that is the case, the current owner must register the car in California. It is illegal to sell a used car in California, that has not been registered and smog certified in California.

When I bought my 1994 968 Coupe in 1996, it was registered in Arizona. In order to facilitate the sale of the car, I paid for the smog Cert., the registration fees to get the car registered in CA and then deducted the cost from the sellers price.
