Harness bar and harnesses
#1

I want to add the weltmeister harness bar to my car and use 6 point harness for PCA DE events. Can someone please tell me how to mount the harnesses (I know how to install the bar). Can the rear harnesses mount directly on to the harness bar or is that not acceptable. Also, I know the side/waist harnesses get mounted in the existing seat belt mounts, but where do the front harnesses get mounted? Do I have to drill into the floor or can I use the front bolts that hold the seat down. Thanks

As I understand it, the intended purpose of the harness bar is to serve as the rear mount for the harnesses. As for the lap belt, the outer mounting point can double with the factory lapbelt using a new high-strength bolt, and the inner mounting point you have to drill into the transmission tunnel. I'd check on my car, but it is in storage. The anti-submarine belt gets mounted to the floor and reinforced with large high-strength washers, as does the inner lap belt mount. I have heard that doubling the sub-strap mounts with the seat bolts is a bad idea but I couldn't tell you exactly why. You might want to check with the vendor who sold you the equipment - often they do installations. I've had good experience with Stable Energies, in NJ.

Also, some feel that 5 or 6-point harnesses are unsafe without a HANS device and rollcage, the theory being that you are pinned upright in your seat in the event of a rollover. Something to research, unless you already have at least a rollbar.

Shoulder belts just goto the bar, either they wrap around it or clip on, depending on belt style. The sub belt mounts typically by putting it through the floor with the large washers (normally the belts come with this hardware).

I don't know that harness bar, but if it is a simple one as I had before installing a roll bar it was only to keep the harness above the shoulders and I mounted the harness to the rear seat lap belt points.

be aware that rules have changed on harnesses, seats, and harness bars:

almost everyone has now prohibited the use of harnesses with factory seats or any seat that does not have slots for the harnesses

harness bars are now required to have an anti-pivot design, which means a 3rd point of attachment or a stop built in so that they will not rotate in a crash when the belts pull on them - some bars no longer pass inspection

harness bar diametrical requirements have increased making some bars no longer pass inspection

Flash,

Where does your chassis brace/harness bar stand in relation to these rules? Does it qualify as an actual roll bar? Excuse the ignorant question, but since your bar was desinged primarily as a chassis brace, I don't remember to what degree it qualifies for the other functions. I sure like the way yours looks and fits...

it meets or exceeds all design and materials requirements of both PCA and SCCA for both a harness bar and a roll bar,

that being said, it is assuming your seat slots are in the appropriate height locations, however, i have worked out a solution for seats whose slots are too high as well, so again, it will meet or exceed all requirements

PMASON, thanks! That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if it could be mounted directly to harness bar. I will use harness bar as guide and mount to rear set belt points. I have racing seats already. Waist belts will be mounted to existing seat belt mounts for front seat. Have to figure out where to drill for the submarine belts.

After some research today, PCA does not allow sub belts to be mounted to seats in any way. Shoulder belts cannot be mounted harness bar

i just re-read the 2010 and 2011 rules and i find no mention of prohibition of mounting to harness bars at all - that being said, the local guys can do pretty much whatever they want if they thinks it makes things safer

i did find that they changed the wording on something, and now i will have to come up with an additional piece for my brace to still meet race spec - no worries - i already designed it and can make it easily enough

Flash,

Thanks, that was what I had thought, but I couldn't remember for sure. Now to figure out what to bribe you with to convince you to build one for me...

I'll of course consult with you as to seat recommendations to get the slots at the right height. Depending on how the rest of my project to make my car more track-worthy goes (fix all the leaks, repair tear in firewall, add 18 lb flywheel, rebuild head, upgrade suspension, get dedicated wheels with racing tires), I think I should be ready for the chassis brace in the March-April time frame. I see this as foundational part of my build, because of the impact on the stiffening of the chassis on the alignment requirements.

lol - i'll try to talk to the bender and the welder today and find out about timing - i am being asked about another brace anyway, and have been trying to get ahold of them on that

lol - funny you should mention that - it's not what you think, but watch for a thread about to pop up - i have only one detail left to work out before i announce it, but i think everyone will be pleased - it's sort of a "thank you" to those who have helped out the site - no more details for now though - just a tease

So I am trying to install the harness bar into the front shoulder points and am trying to keep the shoulder belts in there as well. I need a longer bolt to accommodate both the harness bar mount and the stock seat belt mount. Anyone know what size bolt it is? I picked up a 12mm bolt, but it's too big, thinking 10mm, but want to confirm before I make the return trip.

BTW, if I keep the stock belts in there, I won't need to put a harness belt in the passenger seat since it still qualifies as equal restraint! And, if I can keep the stock belts, no risk of a ticket since I'll use the harness on the track and stock belts on the street. Hoping this will work.
