Hand job difference ?

I'm told that in other " hand-built " cars some differences in the engine mounting, or spaces between engine components , as well as in suspension , chassis , interior, etc can vary as much as, or even more than 1 cm, from one car to another. 1/2 " ?! Guessing either Flash or Pete, who worked on so many different 968s can answer what their experiences have been in that regard with 968s , but I'd imagine whilst that kind of difference may not have much of an impact on day to day stuff, it must be a pain if you're trying to design something that fits in speces where tolerances are very small to start with, or even on fixing and replacing certain parts which may not fit as precisely as they should...?

lol - yeah - it's a pain in the butt. the differences i've seen in fitment have all been related to 92s. i've seen some really odd stuff on the 92s though, like seat belt mounting points being off by almost 1'. that isn't a problem with retractible seatbelts, but it can be a real pain if you are trying to mount a chassis brace. every post 92 engine bay has measured out the same, within "normal" tolerances. even those normal tolerances though can add up the wrong way when you start talking about adding aftermarket stuff that is designed to fit into tight spaces or tie to multiple fixed points.



that being said, i have seen some cars with frames bent and stuff like that. it was pretty easy to tell that it didn't come that way though. it wasn't enough to create a problem per se, but it did make some things line up a bit differently.

A good car upholster should be able to replace only the bolster. I had it done on my seat once. Since then I had the whole seat recovered with leather. You might try to redye the area. I have also done this on my present seats and it makes them look new. Easier than switching backs.

Some years ago when I bought the 94 Tip it had an almost new B & B exhaust system. Fit perfectly. Some years later I bought the 93 6 speed. While getting ready to sell the Tip, I switched the exhaust systems. From mid car where the exhaust system bolts together back the system was about 30 mm short for the 93. No hangars matched up, etc. and it did not stick out the back far enough. I ended up fabbing a couple of flanges and welding them onto about an inch of exhaust pipe. Then everything looked like it should and all hangars were great. I can only assume that the 93 was too long as opposed to the 94 being too short since the pipes fit the 93. Has my 93 been stretched. Can't seem to find any major damage but who knows. Glad it wasn't a problem at the front for the S/C install.

lol - Yeah - that was my car. And while at times during my build, it may have seemed like things like things were off by a foot, the seat belt attachments points that were going to serve as attachment points for the D1R chassis brace were off by about an inch. The strange thing is that several of them were off, not just one, and there was no way we could adjust or finagle anything to get it to fit. The issue was 100% with my car, not with the brace, which I ended up selling to another forum member, whose car it fits perfectly. I've since gotten a weld-in brace/roll bar/harness bar.

Do you think that (or could it be explained as) the 92 cars used 944 body shells that were altered to be 968's?



Just curious, as I am assing that the floor and internal panels probably did not get new tooling to keep costs down?

could be. i know they did use the 944 tubs on some of the early 92 cars. the strut towers are right where they should be for the 944, but not for the 968. found that one out the hard way. so, it makes sense that other things were also different.

Interestingly enough Clouds brace fit in my 93. Wonder if it would have fit in the 92?
