Half-year summary
#1

Since a lot of you seem to have some sort of "other" car for daily use and the 968 is the "toy", I just thought that you might find it interesting to see how much driving my cars get since I have no "other" car. So this is a half-year summary for 2009. This has been the first year that my white car has been mostly working well and not always in for repairs. So I have been somewhat happier than before.

White 92 968 - 16,124 km (10,019 miles) - daily driver now until winter or next breakdown (total km is 301,833 km)
Blue 92 968 - 3,974 km (2,469 miles) - surprised, more than last year, been trying to stay at 6,000 km/year total (total is 65,561 km)
Black 06 Cayenne - 24,003 km (14,915 miles) - not driving much now, winter vehicle (total is 182,405 km)
Silver 08 Cayman S - 5,749 km (3,572 miles) - to work on Fridays and drive on weekend, got it May 1 (total is 5,749 km)

HALF-YEAR TOTAL is 49,850 km (30,975 miles)

I am down a bit from the last couple of years (usually drive about 125,000 km/yr) as I have not been driving to Toronto from Nova Scotia as much.

I envy you $3,000 km/yr guys - your repair and maintenance bills are probably low compared to mine.

Hmmm...two 968s, a Cayenne, and a Cayman. How does that equate to no "other" car? It looks to me like LOTS of cars.

Nevertheless, 30,975 miles in 6 months is a lot of driving, no matter how many cars you do it on. So is 125,000 km/yr.

Well, no other non-Porsche. Point being, I got my cars to drive, not store, so I don't have another non-Porsche to use as the daily driver with the Porsches just for fun and special occasions. They are on the road, getting dirty and wearing out.

At least with 4 in rotation you can slow the wearing a bit.

30,975 miles in .5 year is a lot of driving. Are you in sales driving to and from calls through out the day? Or is your daily commute pretty far?

Environmental consultant. I deal in filth and misery and need to go wherever it may be. Like a human doctor in reverse. Plus I have a 100 km commute each way to work and work 7 days/week. Why you ask? the work is dirty but the money is clean.

This week I was in a sewage treatment facility that flooded. 16 m deep and everything now covered in "floatables". Need to propose a cleaning solution. 10 pounds of crap in a 2 pound bag. It's all fun.

Hey Kim,

I used to clean septic tanks as my summer job during college (true). Need any help? For starters I could share some great stories

My old man used to build sewage treatment plants and he'd always say "It may be sh*t to you but it's bread and butter to me."

Unbelievable mileage Kim! I take the 968 on the nice days & the 'other' car the rest of the time. Yet the sum of the mileage of both of them barely makes 3,000 miles per year. The commute is <2000 per year total. Yeah - a desk job.

Kim:

I'm also in environmental consulting, mostly environmental restoration, environmental toxicology with UXO's thrown int to keep me on my toes.

Porsche gets about 10,000 miles per year as a daily driver/weekend car and the Audi does about 25,00 year for everything else. I bought the Porsche to drive. When and if it finally wears out or is no longer reliable, I'll buy a newer model. The 968 has 140,000 miles on it and the Audi has 145,000.

What's your impressions of the Cayman so far? Also,
how does it compare to the 968's.

The Cayman is fun. It has lots of power and is as tight as a drum. I am no race car driver but it is more capable than I. Seating is much like a 968. View out the windows is similar. Key on left seems to cause me problems even though my Cayenne is the same. Just have my brain thinking that keys are on the right. The Bose stereo with Audiopilot is really good (hey guys, don't crap on me for that, especially those who are into stereos. We all signal process to some extent. A factory install with a subwoofer is good enough for me). I know that it would be heresy to say so, but it drives a lot better than a 17 year old 968. I am sure some will disagree, especially those who 1) have paid more attention to suspension parts and gradual deterioration of same and probably have their cars handling better than when they were new, and 2) those who have not driven a Cayman. To those I say just try it and THEN offer an opinion.

I like all my cars and still drive the 968 more than the Cayman. It's like an old shoe that fits well and I like driving it when it is working right. But, I can tell you, I am getting tired of seeing that red "CHECK ENGINE" light on all the time for electrical codes. It came on again on Wednesday for knock sensor and hall sender codes. My wires are getting very ripe. I hope that somebody will start fabricating wiring harnesses soon.

unfortunately that i not likely to happen - it's a LOT of work, and would be very expensive - copper costs have sailed - if i had to guess, a harness would be at least $2k

and then you get to tear the car apart to install it

Kim- The factory Bose system is very nice for a stock system and does handle better than a 968 IMHO.
