Gripes
#1

The latest trend: responding to every question that solicits an affirmative reply with a resounding " - Absolutely ! ". Can't escape it ; TV programs, man-on-the-street interviews, etc.. Suddenly it seems everyone starts their answer with an absolutely nowadays. It's starting to bug me.

And here's another thing that bugs me : Chatty Kathy in front of you at the grocery store's cash register who decides that it's perfectly acceptable to engage the cashier in small talk about the weather, or her kids or the pets, and continues to talk after the transaction is complete, completely disregarding the line of people waiting impatiently behind her ( yes, it's always a her, I have not seen one man do this yet..) . And if that wasn't enough, she pays with a check, holding up everyone even longer to get the manager's approval, yada, yada, yada. Is it that complicated to get a debit or a credit card ?! Aarrrgh

Ok, just these two gripes for today.

The problem with gripes (and this isn't directed at you, DS - just a general statement on the human race) is that they're seldom directed at the perpetrator as the offense is occurring, and they consequently don't change anything. We should all be like my 81-year-old mother, who while generally still in good health, both physically and mentally (she's still working!), has recently had a little trouble keeping her thoughts to herself. When I visited her recently, we were in a grocery store together, and she was behind a lady in line who for some reason was just taking too long with her transaction. Not looking at anyone in particular, she simply blurted out, loudly enough for anybody nearby to hear, "Hurry up!" I'm sure she hadn't intended to say it out loud - it just came out. Maybe if more people could articulate their frustration with the particular situation as it was unfolding, the dolts frustrating the rest of us would get the message. I know it will never happen, but I wonder how different of a world it would be if the obliviots would have to answer for their transgressions, instead of living in blissful ignorance.

Gotta love the freedom of the elderly

Stop calling me elderly. Much to Liz's chagrin, if we are somewhere and someone is on the phone talking too loudly, I away say out loud " be quiet I don't want to hear your conversation". I am particularly incensed on airplanes. My job requires me to be on call all the time. So when I use my phone I purposely speak in a very quiet tone when I'm stuck around others until I get away. Andy more people should be like your Mom.

I'm too polite ( perhaps to a fault ) so I typically keep minor annoyance frustrations bottled in . Of course there are a few cases when I feel that speaking out will make a difference not just situationally but perhaps with some impact on future behavior, in which case I'll pimp-slap the bi*ch who bothers me :-) ! And yes, a well seasoned age usually comes along with a greater propensity to speak your mind ; I think it's one of the fundamental rights listed in the old folks manual, LOL.

Actually, the loss of a public filter in the elderly is a symptom of early onset Alzheimer's or dementia. It is when you don't say things with your inner voice.

Everyone thinks it's cute, and that the elderly can say or do anything, but it is really something that should be looked at.

I am not saying they have Alzheimer's or dementia if they do this, I am just saying it can be an indicator.

And before everyone starts jumping all over me...I am married to a geriatrician who specializes in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's and dementia.

One of my big gripes is the lottery - they should have separate stores for it. It is annoying when you want to run in and out of a convenience store with one or two items but you have to stand there while someone who obviously looks like they can't afford one ticket, pisses away 60 or 70 dollars on lotto tickets and scratch offs.

All the lottery is anyways is another tax on the poor.

It's 50 million idiots making one idiot look right.

it makes me nuts that we have to put labels on everything. he's misbehaving in school, so he must have ADD. he's babbling like an idiot, so he must have dementia.

i'm not saying that these things don't exist, but all too often it's just a lack of discipline or manners, and not some odd malady. were i a kid today, i would be diagnosed with ADD. in reality, i was just bored and not challenged enough.

Getting back on topic with Dan's off topic...how about the lady who is trying to get the "exact change award" and will keep a line of people waiting (usually the EXPRESS lane) for 40 minutes looking for $0.13....argggg...

Speaking of the EXPRESS lane...that means the customer as well as the check out person...put your stuff down, pay for it, and GET OUT!

How about the idiot that can't count to 10? (The EXPRESS LANE is 10 items!!!), ok sometimes 15, but please follow the rules.

JMO,,

I must be getting old and cranky as I've absolutely (there it is again!) HAD it with cell phone users in movie theaters. Hey knock yourself out during the commercials and previews, but light up that damn phone during the movie and you're getting yelled at. And it generally works - once you publicly shame someone like that they tend to not pull the phone out again.

Good for you for having the cajones to call people out like that.

i'm sick and tired of cell phones - period. makes me crazy that so many people lack the ability to look up from it, especially when you are trying to have a conversation with them. i am known to reach over and take their phone away from them. nothing is that important that it can't wait a few minutes. i am also known to step in front of somebody who is looking at their cell phone while walking, just to trip them up.

I was out on the HArley last night and was more than a bit uncomfortable seeing everyone around me texting. It is enough to want to give up the bike.

Flash, by the way - the software thinks texting is spelled wrong - lol

i just checked it, and it worked fine. bummer. that would have been cool. i hate texting, and pay extra so as not to have it on my phone.

I agree, Flash. Cell phones have literally become another serious addiction this country surely doesn't need. We all seemed to get along just fine in the pre-cell era when the phone was back at the house attached to the wall. Now people seem to have developed an insatiable need to suck up as much information as possible all day long, and Verizon and ATT are more than happy to charge a hundred bucks a month so they can get their fix.

i still get along just fine pretty much without one. i have one, but i rarely use it. most of the time it just sits in the garage. i use about 10-15 minutes a month. i never use it for email. i only use the web browser when i am stuck in an airport or at the car wash. i don't text, ever. i do play solitaire on it, and i do use the camera from time to time.

the older i get, the more i am aware that time is one thing you don't get any more of. i am not going to spend it reading what stupid thing miley cyrus did today, or reading dumb emails or texts about some inane drivel that somebody feels is all important.

I hate snowbirds - they come down here and drive like morons - they have no idea where they are going and they are so freaking oblivious to everyone around them -

Well that's it for me - gotta go to the ER - I blew out my left elbow trying to lift a four foot by four foot slab of concrete onto my tractor bucket - wish me luck - it's probably broken.

Later.

Addictions generate jobs. Cells properly used can make business more efficient. iPads and cell phones allow for the ingestion and processing of more info. It doesn't all have to be about Miley. Unless she is naked with a goat smoking a doob! Although I agree with Ink to a degree, I think age also can allow you to care less about what others think. Mind you I fired my daughter last week so some might argue that I don't give a crap about much of anything!
