Grinding Noise Directly After Starting Engine
#21

Quote:It’s been a very long time since I replaced mine, but as I recall,  starters are (  or at least used to be ..) quite inexpensive so why would anyone put up with buying all those parts and repair / rebuild a starter instead of buying one which you can just  “ plug & play “ ?

Unless of course you enjoy doing all that … masochists !   Rolleyes  Tongue

The starter for the manual 968 is unique to the model, not used on any other car, the tiptronic starter is cheap and common as, used in lots of other cars

The current Porsche price for exchange is nearly £1000,

If thats a low cost option then go ahead, I only rebuild starters for our cars to save owners some serious money

Just the same as making alternator leads, rebuilding gearbox linkages, rebuilding and new seals in brake callipers while sorting out plate lift

I gave up mechanic type work about 30 years ago but can still do these things

I have one starter in stock that has been donated to me for exchange use

Manual version unique, I'm most surprised. I wonder what engineering quirk caused that decision .... anyone know?

I just checked , here in the U.S. and from several sources, the starter for the manual is available ( rebuilt, of course ) most of them Bosch - and it’s specifically listed as a Porsche 968 starter , selling between  $ 275 - $ 325 .  I’ve seen one for $ 590 but the ad claims it’s a  “high torque”  unit ..whatever that means ..  The tiptronic one is around $ 150-$ 175 .

Are the £ 1,000 ones from Porsche,  brand new starters or rebuilt ?   I guess must be rebuilt ,since they’re asking for an exchange , and also it’s doubtful there are any new ones still made …or left in stock .

p.s  I’ll have to see if I kept the receipt , but pretty sure when I bought mine it was about $ 80 .  Many years have gone by since , and like everything else prices for some things doubled, tripled, quadrupled ..

A week on, starter is still working well, and the lack of noise when cranking the engine, not just after it starts, still surprises me every start.  My take on the starter for the Manual 968 is that it is a high quality unit, and just needed some love.  It was nice to be able to completely tear it down and build it up with tools.  I'm quite used to permanently assembled devices that require bending sheet metal tabs / drilling rivets to take apart.

I'll update if things start to go south again.
