Grey Dash Issue
#1

I've read here about the classic grey dash issue..turning brown. Mine is pretty much completely brown on the top. I haven't heard this, but is the brown part a film, or is the grey gone? I tried the magic eraser trick and it seems to work, but if the grey is just gone it seems pointless to go any further and it possibly looking worse. Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

I think it's niether. The brown isn't a film and the grey is not gone but rather the heat and sun has turned the grey brown. The Magic Eraser trick will work but only some of the time and depending on how far into the discoloration process your particular part is. The tops of the door panels do this as well. If you can get it off, make sure to treat the surfaces with 303 Aerospace protectant or other UV type vinyl product. I'd stay away from Armor All.

I've been able to remove some of the brown but not all of it and I've seen and tried to remove some brown on other peoples cars with almost no success. The parts car I just bought has a perfect dash but the tops of the doors are too gone to even think about trying to save...they'll need recovered by an upholsterer.

Give it a try and see what happens. I've had no luck with many different chemicals to take the brown off which is why I'm pretty certain it's not a film but a discoloration of the actual vinyl. Good luck.

Yeah I just tried it and it worked somewhat but most of my damage is sun damage. :-P thanks for the tip

I had the same experience. I think Darryl is right - it appears to be sun damage, and unless you catch it very early, there probably isn't a whole lot that can eb done, unfortunately.

My brother-in-law just bought a franchise in FibreNew, so I'm going to let him look at my vinyl, leather and carpets and see if he can freshen them up. They've got some pretty good looking results from samples I've seen.

Looks like an interesting business. I wish your brother-in-law well. It would be great if it worked on our dashes.

I recently saw a Cab on Vancouver Island that had the "classic grey" interior with the "browning" effect from exposure to sunlight. It was nasty looking.

I feel for those of you that have that problem... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I too had the same issue with my interior and I found this product called "Super Flex" and it is a paint product which can be brushed on and the owner has the exact color match for our classic grey color perfectly. If you need more info let me know.

I bought a paint kit. It was pretty easy and has worked well so far - no chipping, pealing, or browning. The trick is that the grey is different colors - the seats, the vinyl panels, and the steering wheel are all a bit different. So you either get to do the whole thing or you live with a little inconsistency. I chose the inconsistency and no brown.

There is a perfect paint. I've had three units with the deteriorated medium gray that turns to tobacco. The paint cured them all. It is easy to apply, matches perfectly, is a Porsche color, lasts a long time and is fairly inexpensive. I gave mine to Arash when I sold him the car. I will get the info and post it here.

I just found that Jamie covered this on another thread further down on this page. Leather World is the source. They can be found online.

Jamie listed the color data you are looking for.
