Greetings from Western North Carolina
#1

Finally ran into a problem that I almost couldn't fix, so for future reference thought I should go though hassle of registering.....and is more than a bit of hassle....but, assume you guys have had some major hacker/spamer invasions in the past........understand completely, but unfortunate.

I retired from the paint manufacturing business just over three years ago, and found this remarkable place to live: Hendersonville, NC. Small but sophisticated, friendly people that genuinely don't mind Yankees, great weather for the most part (although THIS has been a tough Winter so far....played golf yesterday for first time in 4 weeks...even the natives are complaining about the cold!!), incredible scenery and twisty mountain roads.........perfect for ZOOMER, our '94 968 Cabriolet.

In my younger days, my mobile toys were all British, basically because as a teenager my Dad refused me to buy "Tinny Limey Trash." But I loved the combined smell of Connely leather and burning oil from the engine leaks. Owned a '69 XKE 2 + 2 (my learning car...made all sorts of mistakes, but got me hooked), then a '68 MGB (the car I wanted and could have afforded as a kid...wife HATED it...called it The Washing Machine), and then a '71 XKE Roadster that I restored from a rust heap to a 99.8 point consistent show winner.....yes, for 8 years I was a member of the Q-Tip brigade....drove the car only to shows...was AFRAID to drive it, not for breakdown but for fear of dirt, bugs, and dreaded asphalt cold patch.

A couple of years before I retired, was at a show and a guy offered me a lot more money than the car was worth (less of course than what I had into it, but such is the nature of these obsessions). I resisted of course....probably for ALMOST a minute....but, I had just strained my back from polishing wire wheel spoke number 37 on the left rear, so the deal was struck.

After two years of parking my lawn tractor in the middle of our third car garage position, MY WIFE sees this cute little car on the road...."I want one of those!!" Three months later, ZOOMER came into our lives.........she is and will always remain part of the family...how can you not fall in love with an overgrown puppy.......playful, huge energy, always there, ready for whatever......to the grocery store or to Tampa.....never asks for much, but better not ignore her too long, 'cause not paying attention can get her a bit cranky.

My handle on EBay is Jagfixer (see above)....ZOOMER is SO much more reliable, but every once in a while..... And since I'm still too cheap to pay someone for something I'm pretty sure I can do myself, I'm hoping this site will, if need be, assist me in being a competent 968fixer.

Regards to all.....

Rick Hille

A warm welcome to the forum from a "freindly northern neighbour!
I really enjoyed your introduction. I read twice through, trying to find "the problem that I almost couldn't fix" and did not find it. I see that you have 2 posts already, so I guess I will search around the Forum and find it, because the way you write, it seems like something worthwile knowing.
Now for your wife's influence in finding/purchasing the 968, I can totally relate. After having taken at least ten different Porsche 928's for a test drive, I finally took my wife along to take one out for a second time. She was OK with it but not enthused. I then went with her to look at a 968 cab which was for sale at a dealer (price was out of line with current market). I had not been exposed to a 968 up until that moment. When she saw the 968 she remarked: "I LIKE the looks of this one!". We then went to look at & test drive one that was for sale privately. After our first drive, we BOTH became instantly "sold" on it. It was night and after driving around for a while, we stopped at a gas station to just gaze and admire the looks of the 968 under the bright lights of the gas station canopy.
Look forward seeing you around the forum and sharing your valuable information with us!

Welcome, there are a couple members up in your area, and I'm down in SC. We usually get up there to drive the mountain roads and the dragon one a year. This year it's probably going to be a large event wtih atleast three PCA regions coming up on the same weekend.

Jake...

Thanks for kind remarks.

On the "I almost couldn't fix" issue: I have the OEM CR-1 radio (no secondary amp) and the CDC-1 deck in the trunk. The deck began to give me trouble. Every once in a while when play CD's, the radio screen would display the dreaded "EEEE" or even go blank. CD would keep playing, but if I hit the TAPE or RADIO button and then go back, I'd get nothing from the CD.....no sound and no screen on the CR-1. Then it might just "pop" back on. It was like the CR-1 was losing communications with the deck. Talked to SW Stereo in NJ (supposed to be THE guy). Nice, but said Alpine won't supply parts, so he won't work on. Said it sounded like a player issue, since the CR-1 seemed to do everything else OK.

So bought another CDC-1 on EBay.......plugged it in. After a while same issue. BTW, while fixing (CDC-1 removed) wife took out the car., alarm went off...stopped only by opening the trunk. She WAS NOT happy. So WARNING....don't drive with CDC-1 disconnected.

My last hope was some type of a wiring problem. Pulled radio and sure enough, the CD output wire had a problem....internal wires OK, but the ground was frayed BAD....maybe two small strands connected. Re-soldered ground and now all seems to be OK. But I'm still a little concerned.....inspection indicated the the CD cable was bending a sharp 90 deg., perhaps because hitting the firewall when radio all the way in?? Not sure what best final fix would be to stop this strain...thoughts?

Only other issue I'm looking to go after, but would think straight forward: passenger door handle getting hard to pull and the window has a hard time in moving up the last half inch or so and seating into the sealing rubber. Would think all I have to do is remove door panel and then clean and lube all moving parts. Any tricks here?

Thanks again and regards,

Rick

The door handle issue can be a real pain, lots of fiddly parts and poor vision. The door handle had a kind of plastic turn buckle that allows you to adjust the tension, you probably need to shorten that up so you have more pull on it. Some of the plastic clip parts in the handle do get brittle so be carefull not to break any.

The window, my passenger does that, I think it's a matter of cleaning and greasing.

Do a search, you should find some topics on this.

Hi Rick,

Best damn intro ever written on 968Forums !

Our own OCD site owner Flash is also a Brit Car refugee and I'm sure you'll be hearing from him soon enough.

Glad you found your way here, sorry for the hurdles, but this group is worth the effort.

Welcome,

Jay
