Greetings from Piitsburgh, PA

Hello Everybody!

My name is Peter and I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I do not own a Porsche 968 yet: I joined the forum to learn more about these great cars. Meanwhile, I am looking to buy a 6 speed coupe localy, in Western PA. No luck so far.

Best regards,

Peter

Hello Peter,

Welcome to the forum! Shoot me an email at andrewn@austin.rr.com (I know you're not able to PM on this forum yet). I have a 6-speed coupe I'm about to put up for sale that you might be interested in. Unfortunately, it isn't in PA, but maybe we could work something out. Thanks.

Do a search for Pittsburgh and you'll find some other 968 owners in your area. Also a discussion of some really fine roads to drive when you find your ride. Welcome.

Thank you all!

I have found my ride: it is a 1992 coupe, horizon blue color with 140000miles. I know the mileage is high, but I could not find a car with lower mileage.

I have the records for the major services. The timing and balance belts, along with the chain and chain tensioner were replaced 8 years (18000 documented miles) ago. The belts look new, but after reading some threads on this website I have developed a phobia and am reluctant to drive the car before I change the belts. Do you think that makes sense?

I plan to do the job by myself. First, because I like doing things, second, because I plan to keep the car and I cannot afford to pay ~$2K every 3 years for belts replacement.

It is going to be my first timing belt replacement. I have read all available threads and have a theoretical understanding of how it needs done. I know there is a big difference between theory and practice but I hope that the forum will be willing to share their experience. I found a belt replacement step-by-step DIY on this website but am not able to neither open nor download it (probably because of my “newbie” status).

Can somebody do me a favor and PM the step-by-step DIY for belts replacement? Any info and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The email is: pgpa@ymail.com

Thanks.

8-year old belts should be replaced. And check to see when the last brake fluid change was done as that may be over due as well. Common to see these cars have long periods of deferred maint. when they hit the 100K+ mark.

Post a few more times and you'll be able to see everything. And of course we all want to see a picture of a nice Horizon Blue Coupe - not too many of those around I don't think (Jeff knows for sure).

Welcome,

If the belts are that old definitely need changing. $2k seems a lot though for every 3 years. I'm in the UK and have been quoted (converted into Dollars);

Belts Only $480

Belts & Rollers $1000

Belts, Rollers & Front Oil Seals $1450

Belts, Rollers & Front Oil Seals & Cam Chain & Tensioner Guide Rails, re-timing CAM etc $1980.

The above are all parts & Labour and by an independent (one of the best Porsche Mechanics in the UK)

Thank you all!

I did not get a quote of my own but I found a pretty recent quote on this forum (I believe it was from MI) and the price was arround $2K for all things I would like to replace. Probably, one does not need to replace all the rollers, tensioners, pump etc if he replaces belts regulalrly.

Anyway, I would like to do some things by myself on my car. I read on this forum that belts replacement, although labor intensive, do not requires special skills. I hope the majority agrees on that statement <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />.

I am still not allowed to post the picture.
