Graphic Equalizing of coupe interior
#1

Probably a Flash instant but costly answer on this one.
Since I had my car laid up for 6 weeks waiting for diagnosis/parts/repairs I have had my battery disconnnect for extended periods of time. The result of which has lead to memory loss in my P9800-BT eq section. For the life of me I can't get it to sound decent again so I was wondering if anyone has tried a white noise CD and an audio analyser to set a car to flat response?
Is there a cheap solution like a laptop, a decent Shure mic and some public domain software?

i don't know about public domain stuff, but smart live works

the 9800 should have a mic and setup protocol already

as for tuning afterward, keep in mind that cutting frequencies is always better than boosting them

if you can't get the self tuning to work, start flat - then use the loudness control set to high

set the bass to 40hz and the low of the parametric to 100 - boost 40 but cut at 100, selecting the amount as desired

set the mid to the freq that bugs you most and cut as desired

set the high to what sizzles most - sibilance is usually at about 6k

drive and readjust for road noise

I was pretty proud of myself when I recently turned down the second bar from the left on my equalizer thingy and my sub suddenly sounded a whole lot better.

sibilance - huh?

yup - that low/mid thing makes things muddy - generally it is from about 90-140hz that causes the problems (and then the harmonic up from that at about 300)

a kick drum focuses at about 60z - a small bump just below that will help

the grunt of a bass guitar centers at about 200hz - it's easy for this to get muddy though, so be careful there

guitars feature their "crunch" at about 440hz with the accents at about 2.5-3k

honky sounding vocals are 800-1200 - a small dip here will clean that up

screeching sounds are usually about 2k (whiny female vocals and such) - a little dip here will clean that area up

shrill sounds are usually about 5k - this is what will make your ears "tired" - get this right and you can enjoy higher volumes longer

sibilance is about 6k (the "sssss" sounds)

the "air" sound is about 10k - this will give life to the music, but too much will just make it sound hissy

most adults usually lose the ability to hear above about 12k

good luck

I'm still good to about 17K, I only have about 3 concerts to my credit in my 'Yute" (Cousin Vinny). The TV flyback transformer still bugs me after 51 years, that's a good thing.
Just for fun....
I made a white noice CD yesterday, downloaded a real time spectrum analyser app and found the only mic in the house - a PC headset with a freq response of probably 200-5000 Hz and went out to play. I made a couple of test EQ setup to flatten the car and it sounded horrible. I know it was pointless with that mic but I had fun.
The other problem is finding a decent piece of music that was well recorded, consistent and that I like to set things up "by ear".

i have a few different CDs i use, each featuring specific sections of the range

doesn't your deck have the mic input for the self tuning? mine did

Hmmm self-tuning? missed that page in the manual. Off I go to find that gem. Tks

yeah - there is a mic that comes with the deck that plugs into a sub-mini jack in the back - you enter in parameters like speaker placement - then you run the auto-programming - this "listens" to the cockpit, and sets time alignment and such, as well as flattening the eq

it's a good starting point

Well I must be a victim of the infamous "Not allowed in your country". I have only 2 AUX inputs and no mic input. Scoured the manual and there is no mention of the self alignment option like I have in my home theatre receiver. Of course I have the Cdn English/French product so the feature you speak of has probably been expuragated like the Gannet! (only Python fans need laugh)

hmmm - i wonder if that is a difference between the 9800 and the 980 premier? they are otherwise identical as far as i can tell

Yeah, you don't want the Gannet, they wet their nests! I always seem to get a 'lovely sound set up in my car' EQ wise, until I drive, then its awful.
