got port ?
#1

Oh, the horror of it - I just poured the last few drops of what was left of my

Warre 1977, went for the reserve and... no more Warre. No Dow, No Quinta,

no Fonseca.. NADA ! No more bottles anywhere. Damn ! Now I can empathize with those poor sailors who, in desperation exclaimed : Any port in the storm ! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

and...why this useless post you ask ? For the PSA, of course : make sure you always have a bottle of port in the house.

Victoria Tawny in hand in honor of your post--I prefer a nice vintage blend like what was in your reserve but this Tawny is sweet and tasty nonetheless. My wife's Great Uncle at 87 only drinks port so we try to keep at least a bottle in stock.

Cheers, Glau

Just had some 1985 Dow last week at a group cooking/wine drinking dinner...

Must say it was in very good form.

Sorry for your loss!

My brother turned 40 in 1995 and I found a wonderful 1955 port for him back then: I still remember how wonderful it was (and I'm sorry: I don't recall the house). Tried to repeat the trick this year, but the prices had gone out of my range.

IMHO, you can't go wrong with any bottle retailing at or above the $ 35

level from any of the major houses. I stay between $ 25 - $ 40 and found every single one I had to be exceptional. But that being said, I'm not a port connoisseur. The Warre 1977 vintage I finished is around $ 100 ( I think ) and happened to be in my house because it was a gift ! Not sure I'd bring myself to spend that much for port.

well, as an indicator, we stock a few different years of far niente cab here, so keeping a good bottle around is no biggie, as long as it keeps - since we are not port drinkers, and it would be for guests (getting the hint dan?) i would not want it to go bad

And, as another hint, I've always been a very pleased consumer of Far Niente. Particularly the Chardonnay, I don't recall trying their cab.

ooh - definitely try it - especially the 95 or the 98, but they are all really good

Oh.. I'm salivating like Pavlov's dog.. can only imagine how incredible that must have been...

The Far Niente cab is outstanding ! ( In spite of the fact that you pay a premium for that beautiful design on their labels <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

Yes, Flash - LOL, "guests" hint noted... you won't have to ask twice. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Couple 'o months to go..

Port keeps pretty well, don't think you'll have to worry about spoilage.

Oh man, give me a decent bottle of cab or meritage, a smooth tequila, a vintage port or a top shelf grappa and I won't need much else in life.

Oops - and the 968 !!

If you live in the Pac North West, visit "The Spanish Table" in Seattle (next to Pike Place) they have a great selection of Spanish and Portuguese wines. I care for Warre's Otima to keep around myself. A friend of mine also makes an INCREDIBLE Port style wine with berries in addition to grapes. It's still only a five year old wine, but wickedly tasty already.
