Gone Racin'
#1

found a 1988 944S (16v 2.5l) LSD car in the paper this weekend. 93,600 miles and sitting for 2+ years. Made an offer and towed it home for $2,400. The PO had started to replace the cam chain and lost interest. Once its back together, I'm looking to start with DE's until I get my competition license. Any suggestions on spring rates, sway bars, brake pads, or power steering delete? I am looking at the stock classes.

You'll probably get alot more response from more experienced guys on Rennlist -- especially over on the racing forum -- but the general consensus seems to be (I'm just passing on what I've been told):

1) make sure the car is in top shape first (engine, fresh fluids, rubber, etc)

2) second, upgrade the component behind the steering wheel, on top of the driver seat next -- nothing beats mileage

and then

3) people swear by either the 968 M030 sway bars or Weltmeister setup (but watch the class rules)

4) no clue on pads -- relatedly plain stock, non-drilled non-slotted rotors are good enough

5) lot of 944spec guys seem to prefer disabled PS over manual steering for the higher gearing

The 944S tranny is a fun setup -- came with short 5th.

Spring rates are all over the board.

But as for me.

968 Racecar: MOTON SUSPENSION 1000 lbs front 900 lbs rear

944 streetcar: BILSTEIN ESCORT CUP 750 lbs front 650 lbs rear.

SWAYBARS:

968 M030 with rear adjustable to increase/decrease oversteer/understeer

944 "SAME"

BRAKES:

968 MO30 BIG BLACKS (Maximum aloud for f stock racing)

944 (smallest stock brakes I've ever seen but with hawk blues she stops on a

dime).

BRAKE FLUID:

1) Catrol synthetic race ($55.00 a bottle)

2) AP racing 551 or 600 ($16.00 a bottle)

3) ATE blue ($12.00 a bottle)

Leave motor stock and change belts often

Have a serious look at LEDA suspesion form Karl Poetl's RACERS EDGE.

1) I would recommend 20 weekends of track days before going toe to toe in battle.

2) 12 track day weekends might qualify you to race but don't expect to win your

first race.

3) Watch the lines of the fastest competitors including the pros and you will

become fast very quickly.

4) Use the whole track and steer a little as possible.

5) Try to be full throttle on the circuit as long as you can stand it and use the

lowest gear posible upon entry to each turn.

GOOD LUCK.

Before doing any mods I suggest figuring out what organization and class you want to race with. Read the respective rules books because what you can do to the car varies quite a bit. Off hand, I can think of PCA H Stock, SCCA ITS, and 944 cup as possible venues for a 944S.

I would concentrate on basic maintenance, safety gear and getting as much track time as possible before getting too crazy.

No matter what, bring your wallet. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Also bring your mates and their wallets as well!

I think personally I have underestimated the cost of owning a race car.

But hey...who wants to be rich!
