Getting better or getting worse

Ever have that sweet feeling that your car is really looking great? Just replaced that worn out leather, or got a new set of tires, or finally cleaned out that engine bay, got those braces on?



Ever have that sinking feeling that those tires you just put on are looking pretty worn? Or that those damn swirls are back, and I just had it professionally buffed last year, or that despite my best efforts to upgrade the suspension I'm sure that the body rolled just a hair in that last turn, and where did that stinking hood dent come from?



I swear that this stuff makes me crazy. One day I'm pleased with how far its come, two weeks later I think - damn, I just put 700 more miles on it and it's no longer perfect - that sort of thing?



Or maybe I'm just crazy period.



Anyone else suffer with this weird disease? And if so do you have a name for it? Obsessive-compulsive; general anxiety disorder, or what?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news rxter but you have a severe case of Flas***is. The good news is that you can keep all of us informed of your progress in remedying your malady....start with the bonnet(hood)it needs to look right at all times!

I don't know about all that, but my car drives smoother and quieter, and handles way better, when it's just been washed/detailed. I'll have to use my Dynolicious app to see if there's an actual hp increase after washing, but my butt-dyno says yes.

try letting 5 judges crawl all over your car to tell you its flaws; i have straddled that line between hobby and obsession since i entered my first concours.



some of your clinical car anxieties may be environmentally related; i recently read that san diego has more car washes per capita than any other US city.

I am so glad that I don't suffer from this malady alone. It's anal compulsive and there is cures are difficult at best. But, I read this great article in a recent liberal bastion, the New Yorker. The title was "Fore" and it regarded golf. Read it, embrace it and you can be cured!

Glad to see that I'm not alone. The best thing I've done for the disease recently is started parking my DD outside and walking in the front door, bypassing the garage completely. Gives me a temporary reprieve as I don't have to look at the car every day.



Oh, and driving it of course is a cure all. When she's breathing I really don't care what's wrong or what's missing or what she looks like.

I think there are a fair chink of us who have some form of obsessive compulsive tendancies. The front RH fender now has ripples in it - I am assuming from when the engine and SC went in, with mechanics leaning on it. Not happy jan, as this was recently fixed. Once you know about it - it just drives you mad. It is like having a chipped tooth - it is always there just waiting to distract and annoy you.

Last time I put my car in the shop, it was with clear instructions that the fenders were perfect and I wanted them to stay that way. It came out with one ripple. It's in there again, and again I've given clear instructions about no ripples. I don't consider that obsessive compulsive so much as aversion to damage that affects resale, so that's just protection of my investment.

I though trying to make a 20 year old car look like it just left the factory was a hobby, not a disease...

In any event, if it is , I have it bad.. (4 +-20 year old cars..)

yeah - i've had the disease for a LONG time - before i moved to los angeles, i had 12 cars, almost all fully restored or race prepped classics, 4 motorcycles, and a trailer - it was a constant struggle to keep them all up to snuff, with me continually seeing something that needed to be polished, chromed, replaced, fixed, redone, etc



now that i am again accumulating cars, i am back at it again



the blue one is the biggest headache - when i repainted it i had it completely stripped down to factory prep, shot, cleared, and color sanded - it might as well be black for as much as it shows every flaw - it has been over 5 years now since i had it done, and it really needs it again, but i'm going to wait until i have a year where i log at least 4k miles, and that has not happened in the last 4 years
